Girls with dreams become women with vision. Through a print magazine–kahani–girls from around the world will come together to share personal stories that will inform, elevate and inspire one another. We are a print-first initiative, targeted at girls ages 12 to 18-years-old, featuring a global perspective and a diverse representation of girls from as many communities, cultures and countries around the world as possible. By focusing on print, kahani will remain accessible to girls in locations where connectivity remains a luxury rather than a part of everyday life—from rural villages in Uganda to neighborhoods in the Bronx.

    Meet our new community-elected Advisory Council Member, Babita Patel from KIOO Project and kahani! Story behind her name: I was named after a Bollywood actress from the 1960s. Babita Kapoor comes from a big Bollywood family, married into a bigger Bollywood family, and proceeded to have Bollywood children. If relating it to Hollywood, it would be the equivalent of being named Audrey after Audrey Hepburn. In Sanskrit, it means "small child" ???? and in Puerto Rican slang, it means "a little bit of drool." ?? Where she calls home: Lanape land that is commonly known as New York City All that she does: I evolve societal’s “us versus them” way of thinking to an “us and them” through communications using storytelling. As a communications consultant, I develop creative content across various mediums. For over 15 years, my work has helped organizations raise awareness, inspire action, increase revenue, and create positive change. Before that, I spent the first 10 years of my career in advertising. By creating TV commercials, billboards, print ads, digital ads and guerilla marketing campaigns for Fortune 500 companies, I honed my skills in marketing and communications. When I found my calling to help the often forgotten voices tell their own stories, I brought these skill sets with me. Recently, I developed a campaign to connect employers in the US with professional Afghan refugees. Not only were corporations exposed to a new pool of job-ready employees to fill their open positions, the initiative became a part of an advocacy campaign to pass meaningful legislation in the US Congress. #ocimpact #globalleaders #unconference #socent #nonprofitleaders #advisorycouncil

    "Lack of queer representation left me longing for a femininity I wasn’t in touch with. I soon owned little sense of self, and ended up reflecting the personality and appearance of what others allowed me to be. With a fear of unpopularity, I often tried to match what my peers thought was cool. This period of personal growth is ongoing; l've continued to use visual art as a vehicle for expression and acceptance. Through my work, l've come to the belief that I'm myself regardless of how I present my physical appearance, my demeanor, my interests.     "I needed to know what true independence felt like." Orquidia's letter depicts her struggles and encouraging words as a first-generation college student. Amidst all of the naysayers in her life, she encourages those in similar shoes to find community in their college setting.
