?? Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, but it can also be a season where grief and trauma feel especially heavy ?? I want to take a moment to acknowledge everyone who is navigating the complexities of healing during this time. As a therapist specializing in trauma and grief, I see firsthand the courage it takes to face these challenges, especially around the holidays. I am incredibly grateful for those who trust me with their stories and allow me to be part of their healing journey. This Thanksgiving, let’s give ourselves permission to feel everything that comes up—joy, sadness, gratitude, and grief. Wishing you a gentle and mindful holiday. ??

?? Delayed Grief ?? Delayed grief is a phenomenon where people hold back their own grief, often prioritizing others’ needs and postponing their own emotional processing. For therapists, understanding delayed grief is essential—it’s a reminder that healing doesn’t always happen on a clear timeline. Many clients initially believe they’ve managed a loss, only to realize they’ve been avoiding the deeper feelings associated with it. In therapy, creating a safe space for these emotions, no matter how much time has passed, is key. The work involves gently guiding clients to acknowledge the grief they may have pushed aside for months or even years. Healing starts when we make room for our own needs, one step at a time.

?? Seasonal Grief ?? In the world of grief counseling, "seasonal grief" is a topic that doesn’t always get enough attention. Certain times of the year—whether tied to personal anniversaries or simply the change in weather—can trigger deep emotions for those who are grieving. In therapy, it’s important to validate these feelings and explore why specific seasons or holidays may hold more weight. Addressing seasonal grief is about acknowledging the profound connection between our memories, senses, and the passage of time. For anyone supporting a grieving person, be mindful that certain seasons might be harder, and your compassion during these times can make a world of difference.

In Kerplunk, every stick is connected, each one supporting the marbles that rest above. Similarly, in therapy, our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are interconnected—each one influences the others. Pulling out a single stick can shift the entire structure, just as addressing one thought pattern or emotional wound in therapy can have a ripple effect throughout our mental and emotional health. Therapy is about understanding these connections: identifying which "sticks" are holding up unhealthy patterns, which are supporting healthy behaviors, and how removing or changing one can impact the whole system. Focusing on one "stick" at a time in therapy is crucial. Trying to tackle everything at once can feel overwhelming, like pulling multiple sticks in Kerplunk and watching the marbles fall uncontrollably. Instead, therapy encourages a steady and mindful approach—facing fears and difficult emotions one at a time, learning to let go of what no longer serves us, and finding ways to accept what is outside our control. Through this careful process, we strengthen the core of our emotional structure, building a solid foundation that can hold even as we continue to shift and change. The goal isn’t to keep the marbles from ever falling, but to create a structure that can handle the ups and downs of life with resilience.
