Daniel Davis reflects on his first year with Justice Innovation Lab and how that experience came full circle for him during JIL's training with the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office in Memphis, TN. He writes, “JIL opened my eyes. It taught me to look at prosecution in a way I never had before. JIL showed me data. And, that data threw my central identity as a ‘good’ prosecutor into sharp relief. What does it mean to be a good prosecutor? How do we measure that? What metrics do we choose?” #prosecutor #data Jared Fishman Kelli Ross Metz Rory Pulvino

Building data-informed, human-centered solutions for a more equitable, effective, and fair justice system.
关于我们
Nearly 2 million people are incarcerated in the United States on any given day, with hundreds of thousands being held in jail without a conviction while awaiting trial. This has a particularly devastating impact on minority and low-income communities, which are disproportionately represented in the criminal legal system. Our goal at Justice Innovation Lab is to reduce harmful outcomes, including over-incarceration and unjust racial and economic disparities. Our team of data scientists, human-centered design experts, prosecutors, policymakers, and community advocates support local leaders in identifying unfair practices and developing effective alternatives. JIL partners with decision-makers who have the power to make impactful changes to the criminal legal system. We collaborate extensively with local prosecutors who have widespread authority and discretion to drive reforms. We also work with judges, law enforcement officers, and community organizations, as they each have unique capabilities to help change take root. Working with our local partners and their data, we integrate systems mapping, data analysis, human-centered design, and interactive training sessions to drive innovative change through our collaborative, data-informed approach. Insights gained through our partnerships allow us to both generate solutions tailored to individual jurisdictions and develop broadly-applicable interventions. JIL utilizes data to develop innovative solutions to criminal justice issues and measure the impact of our interventions. This work relies on a deep understanding of data gained through an iterative and collaborative process with local jurisdictions. Our data team cleans, standardizes, analyzes, and visualizes data to effectively communicate findings and facilitate change. JIL also strives to promote the value of data in the criminal legal system to help actors understand why data literacy and accuracy are important, and how data can be used to improve outcomes.

This project has been years in the making and I'm very grateful to everyone that contributed. Trying to bring more evidence and best practices to the justice system will take time, but needs to happen so that our conversations are not rooted in antiquated assumptions. Also, if you are a qualitative researcher with some survey experience and interest in prosecution/criminal justice, we are looking for a partner to help evaluate the impact of the RCT so please reach out.
When our Chief Implementation Officer Rory Pulvino joined Justice Innovation Lab in 2020, he envisioned getting to work with offices across the country interested in using data to improve justice outcomes in their respective jurisdictions with the pinnacle being the opportunity to institute a Randomized Control Trial (RCT). JIL’s first partner – the Ninth Circuit Solicitor’s Office in Charleston, SC – turned out to be willing to take that chance on Rory and the JIL team, resulting in one of the first (maybe the first) RCTs in a local prosecutor’s office in the country. Last Friday marked the completion of the first phase of the RCT, which was the culmination of years of work to improve data collection, identify possible areas of improvement, and devise a realistic solution that wouldn’t add harm and would plausibly reduce it. In this week’s post, Rory reflects on what we did on the way to devising our experiment and thanks all those who made this project possible. Jared and the whole team at JIL are doing work that takes effort, but produces transformative results. JIL has a lot of rigorous measures of impact, but even better is the feeling that people get in crafting solutions for their communities. The need is immense, and the demand for this work far exceeds capacity. If you have ideas about how to fund this work at scale, please get in touch.
As recent surveys have shown, large swaths of America have no or very little confidence in the current criminal legal system. Communities across the country are struggling to address concerns over both public safety and just law enforcement. While it is easy to point fingers, it is often difficult to build consensus around how to fix what is broken. At Justice Innovation Lab, we believe there is a more effective way to build safe and equitable communities. JIL helps communities use data and systems-thinking to set public safety priorities around community needs and values. In this week’s post, Executive Director Jared Fishman writes about JIL’s partnership with the Shelby County (TN) District Attorney General’s Office and the training we hosted where more than 100 prosecutors and community members in Memphis discussed challenges facing their community and began thinking of ways to improve it. #justice #prosecutors #systemsthinking Donald Braman Daniel Davis Kelli Ross Metz Rory Pulvino Arnold Ventures Microsoft Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies Stand Together Trust

This week’s JIL@GW reading is Chapter 5 of “Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy” by Cathy O’Neil. In this chapter, “Civilian Casualties: Justice in the Age of Big Data,” O’Neil looks at predictive programs and software that police use to assist with patrol for crime and how those programs drive officers to certain geographic locations – many times perpetuating bias against certain neighborhoods or groups of people. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
