Justice Funders is a partner and guide for philanthropy in reimagining practices that advance a thriving and just world.

关于我们

Justice Funders is a partner and guide for philanthropy in reimagining practices that advance a thriving and just world. We envision a world that honors the sacredness of our natural resources and recognizes the inalienable rights of all. We assert that philanthropy must take an active role in building this world by redistributing all aspects of well-being, democratizing power and shifting economic control to communities. Redistribution requires us to reject the accumulation of wealth and power. It means letting go of two narratives that currently dominate philanthropy: 1) charity, which perpetuates power dynamics between givers and receivers without tackling root causes of injustice; and 2) investment, which expects a financial return to the ultimate benefit of the investor. By embracing redistribution, we are following the lead of the most courageous movement leaders of our time, who are standing in their power and unapologetically asserting their rights to live with dignity and to thrive. We are deeply inspired by this movement moment and recognize that now - more than ever - philanthropy must be just as bold and relentless. What this means for philanthropy is that, rather than accumulating wealth and power, we must use it to resource movements that fight the systems that oppress us and also support the creation of new, local, resilient economies that build wealth in low-income communities and communities of color. We are guided by the Just Transition principles for building political and economic power to shift from an extractive economy to a regenerative economy. As such, a Just Transition for philanthropy requires philanthropic institutions to shift their practices away from extraction towards regeneration, which requires fundamentally shifting our underlying assumptions about capital and our underlying approach to philanthropy. At Justice Funders, we are re-imagining a world that works for all of us, and philanthropy's role in creating it.

Last week, we shared our latest e-newsletter with our subscribers. Like most issues, it included an opening letter sharing our reflections on the current political moment — and a few things, none of which are new, philanthropy can do to absolutely meet this moment with action and heart. We're sharing this newsletter highlight here on LinkedIn, and hope you'll take a few minutes to read it and share it. • Join us from 10am - Noon PT on Tuesday, March 18! We're co-hosting 'Navigating the Goo: a spend-out for regeneration' webinar with Solidaire: In nature, a caterpillar completely dissolves into a gooey, magical state before emerging as a butterfly. We believe the same kind of transformation happens when private foundations spend-out. In other words, we believe a shift from wealth accumulation to wealth redistribution gets us closer to a just and regenerative economy. During our time together on the 18th, we'll have a powerful, transformational conversation about what it means to spend-out, reimagine philanthropy, and move money and resources in service of justice.?Hear from Philanthropic Transformation Strategist Farhad Ebrahimi, Shantell Bingham of Liberating Investment in the Food and Farm Ecosystem, Kathryn Gilje of Ceres Trust, Sonja Swift of the Swift Foundation, and Justice Funders Co-Executive Director Dana Kawaoka-Chen. Whether you’re part of a foundation, a movement, or just curious about the future of philanthropy, we invite you to be part of the conversation. Please register using the link below by March 14. We will be sharing a recording with attendees via link following the event. bit.ly/navigatingthegoo

Our friends at NDN Collective have a history of moving money to communities during turbulent times. We're sharing their new For The People Campaign that calls on philanthropists to give more—especially since federal funding is freezing and putting so much at risk. Hoping you will share with your networks, too.

The For The People Campaign is designed to provide critical resources through our current grantmaking programs and organizing work to strengthen our movement, enhance the resiliency of frontline actions, and catalyze the kind of transformative change that is urgently needed at this time. By directly funding those doing work on the ground, this campaign will ensure that Indigenous Peoples have resources necessary to build a future rooted in self-determination and collective liberation. The campaign aims to provide essential resources through our existing grantmaking programs and organizing efforts. These resources will strengthen our movement, support frontline actions, and drive impactful change. FTPC is a call to action for individuals and institutional philanthropy to support Indigenous Peoples, Indigenous-led movement infrastructure, and community-based organization. NDN Collective is calling upon philanthropy to: ? Move money quickly to movement organizations that are prepared for the fight ahead? ? Support general operating activities with multi-year grants ? Increase philanthropic giving from 5% to 10%? ? Invest into long-term strategies for the next 20-50 years led by movement leaders ? Endow movement organizations By directly funding grassroots efforts, like FTPC, it empowers Indigenous Peoples with the resources they need to shape a future grounded in self-determination and collective liberation. As we navigate these challenging moments of rage, grief, devastation, and despair, our steadfast and visionary movements are continuing to organize, build power, and take collective action to advance long-term systemic change toward the liberated futures we all deserve. We as a?philanthropic sector must also continue to do the hard work of truly living into the values we espouse, not just with our grantmaking but with all of the resources we have at our disposal. Social justice movement leaders have sounded the alarm about the harmful ways in which foundations typically manage their endowments. The?Just Transition Investing Academy (JTIA)?is a new program offering from Justice Funders to support philanthropy professionals – especially those in programmatic and grantmaking departments of institutions that manage an endowment – who want to deepen their practical and conceptual investment knowledge and explore the transformative potential of applying a Just Transition lens to investment portfolios. We are now seeking applications from philanthropy professionals to join the Just Transition Investing Academy. We are accepting applications through January 20, 2025. Visit the JTIA page to learn more about the program, the program fees, and the application process: https://lnkd.in/gRa4ktFh
