DHS’ technology-backed surveillance and deportation programs will only expand as government attacks on immigrant communities are supercharged in the months and years ahead. We must use this moment to escalate pressure on DHS regarding transparency around AI use. We led efforts, joined by 100+ organizations, urging the White House to use its authority to terminate DHS’s non-compliant AI programs and to deny waivers and exemptions that would enable DHS to continue withholding information from the public about its use of AI for surveillance, detention, and deportations.?Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ezWwU_8r

In collaboration with Just Futures Law, EPIC published a break down of how data brokers harm immigrants & circumvent due process. This is part of EPIC's ongoing series of resources about the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's Fair Credit Reporting Act rulemaking process & data brokers https://lnkd.in/ep7jYic2? Data brokers compile and sell sensitive information such as immigration status and employment history. These profiles can be used by employers, landlords, and financial institutions to discriminate against immigrants, denying them jobs, housing, or credit.?Immigration enforcement agencies, particularly Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), purchase extensive personal data on immigrant communities from data brokers. New rules being considered by the CFPB would clarify that data brokers are covered by the FCRA, meaning that data brokers can only collect consumer information for a limited number of permissible purposes. Minimizing the data that brokers amass and sell in the first place is a powerful safeguard for immigrants: you don’t have to protect what you don’t collect.?
