Our JLYF Youth Advisory Board met this month in the studio to wrap gifts for @redbagskc! Every YAB member brought gifts for our adopted child. Red Bags KC is a 501(c)(3) organization that brings the spirit of the holidays and holiday gifts to Kansas City foster children, low-income families, and at-risk youth. Just Like You Films is a Mid-American Emmy award winning and Oscar qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit film production company and our mission is to raise a global generation of kids who because of their knowledge and understanding are more empathetic and compassionate people. We are currently in production on our first feature length film, Just Like You - Anxiety and Depression. In 2018, we released Just Like You - Diabetes in partnership with JDRF and starring hall of fame baseball player, George Brett and 1999 Miss America, Nicole Johnson. In 2017, Just Like You - Facial Anomalies received theatrical distribution through AMC Theatres in over 200 theaters nationwide in a bundle with the feature film, Wonder qualifying it for an Oscar. Our films have been viewed on the Just Like You Films' youtube channel over a million times in 275 different countries. We were honored to be awarded 2 Mid-America Emmys, the Tash Positive Images in Media Award, the National Down Syndrome Congress’ Education Award, The KC Jewish Film Festival’s Trailblazer Award, the AMC Cares Award and the Autism Society of the Heartland’s Making A Difference Award. We were nominated for the The Golden Door International Film Festival’s Autism Award, Best Editing Award and won the Raising Awareness Award for our Down syndrome film. We are also a Royals Charities Grant Recipient, an Arts KC Grant Recipient and a Google Ad Grant recipient. JLY Films are distributed on Learn 360, an educational video platform reaching 8 million kids in 25,000 schools in the United States and Canada. Down Syndrome is translated into Spanish, Portuguese, Icelandic and is closed captioned for the hearing impaired.

JLYF’s new animated “Reels of Compassion” logo! This logo will be among the very first images audiences see at the beginning of each of our four new films—the May Contain Collection and Rise and Shine. This animation reflects Just Like You Films’ filmmaking approach: capturing life as it is, balancing an uplifting tone with the difficult realities our stories convey. 1)“Spark”, a lone sphere bravely seeking to share a unique part of themselves that is often misunderstood and causes them pain. 2) “Beam”, the larger sphere, arrives, representing the many caring individuals of Just Like You Films—our community of supporters, volunteers, donors, producers, creatives, and filmmakers. 3) “Beam” ‘sees’ “Spark”, honors their bravery, and recognizes their purpose: to ignite a universal understanding that will end the stigma causing them pain, spread kindness, and shine a light on our common humanity. 4) As shapes fall into place, forming a camera with the JLYF color gradient, it becomes clear that “Spark” and “Beam” will bring their story to life cinematically, beaming it outward to the world creating the kind of connection only powerful media can achieve. Thank you to all of the amazing educators who joined us today at the Kansas City PBS Annual K-12 Tech Conference! We shared an exclusive preview of short clips and the trailer from May Contain: Two Sides, our latest VR film. Teachers and librarians shared the need for empathy and understanding of life threatening food allergies in the classroom and how VR technology can play an important role in education. We loved sharing our “VR Bar” and hearing feedback. Much more to come on this 3 part collection of films!

Woo hoo! Huge update! We were thrilled to work with Emmy winning editor Casey O'Brien to finish editing our film May Contain: My Life - A docudrama feature film that dives deep into the real-life experiences of living with food allergies. By the end of the week, we will have 3 completed films in the "May Contain" package, which offer three ways to understanding life with food allergies. These have been submitted to festivals this month and we are working on ways to best share them with the world so they can help as many people as possible!
