STEAM Saturdays our community event is expanding to STEAM everyday with “STEAM in the Community” Junior Docs is partnering with organizations from healthcare centers to hospitals to corporate offices to help students “Find the STEAM in everything” all around them. The events are meant to be collaborative and include a Junior Docs lab, giveaways and an opportunity to explore the host site whether it’s an Emergency Room or a Grocery Store and provide a hands on experience that increases the STEAM Spark. The goal is to collaborate to help build the next generation of confident curious experts. What if we started building capacity early and what if we started using the examples in our community- imagine where we’d be! Well I can’t wait to see?? Who shall we collaborate with next? The sponsoring host site will get to have input in the lab we lead and focus that highlights their industry. August begins our collaboration with Valley Health in Vegas/Henderson and we are very excited. Registration opening soon.

It’s STEAM Saturday! Let's talk about math. Did anyone stop reading there? ?? Last night, a friend's high school daughter mentioned dreading a summer math class, exclaiming she'd never use it. She’s not alone - a great deal of the population feels this way about math, dismissing its relevance. But understanding concepts, learned through math, is crucial at any age. Math fosters critical thinking and problem solving. So while, I don’t directly use my calculus, the skills it taught—like grit and pattern recognition—help me in creating strategy, problem solving, and analytics.(now did I have this epiphany senior year of high-school while sweating through calculus- absolutely not-lol) But that’s my goal in sharing with students/people now. I also get that part of the reason as we grow older we disconnect from math is because the concepts grow harder, further out of reach of our daily lives- and engaging seems way less fun. So I do champion the importantance - not only of making sure that we point out relevance and make connections for students early and often but make it engaging , fun- and incorporate the arts like when I worked at Two Rivers Public Charter School and our middle schoolers did a math rap showecase. A few years ago I was invited to share some of my thoughts on this topic with Edutopia - George Lucas Educational Foundation Next week I’ll be following up with my friend’s daughter. I let her math vent & enjoy kicking off Friday free of an unsolicited Kam Spam teachable moment- but Monday is a different story. ??

If you know me you know that my themed days go beyond “Positive self-talk Sundays” into “Ice Cream Sundays, Meatloaf Mondays, Taco Tuesdays… Fastfood Fridays ??(and there’s more) That’s just how my brain ?? works. With that being said “STEAM Saturdays” is upon us. And speaking of the brain it’s one of my favorite things. When people meet me especially on a day where I have mixed every pattern and color in my outfit -they put me squarely -right brain. But depending on the topic or place they are often surprised at my left brain tendencies and eventually they discover that I’m a cacophony of both-as we all are. The brain constantly integrates both hemispheres for most activities, but dominance can still exist based on preferences and strengths- but it has more to do with use. For instance, excelling in analytical tasks may suggest left-brained dominance, while a preference for creativity indicates right-brained dominance. However most of us are all a mash up and switching back and forth more often than we name. Sometimes early on kids are pushed to believe that they are more dominant in one side of the brain and that’s just the way it is and this causes them to show up or not in certain areas - and develops their self-talk. Perhaps they land at “I’m not a math person” When I started teaching STEAM Ed- my aim is to pivot that conversation. My response to that is that no one is a math person but rather a person doing math. When it comes to training the brain particularly in young people - engagement in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education, early and often, nurtures both sides, encouraging a balanced approach to learning that harnesses logic and creativity. This gives the brain a workout that strengthens all of its muscles, ensuring a well-rounded cognitive development and the ablility to leverage both sides as needed. When I teach kids about the brain or work with educational professionals or people in general I make it very clearly that 1. It is ours to train & 2. None of us have to be defined by one side for any determined period of time. STEAMing into the weekend ???????????????? During the Las Vegas Science & Technology Fesitval- which is 9 days of intentional engagement across the city in STEAM Ed., Nearly 100 more Junior Docs built science sense & confidence while finding the STEAM in everything. Often times students do not pursue paths because they don’t see themselves as capable. We must start early and often instilling the right self-talk as well as exposure to complex topics so they can build the confidence to as generic as it sounds believe that “ I can be anything” It’s STEAM Saturday so let’s talk about building STEAM Mindsets and helping kids and those who engage them understand how to Solve problems like a Scientist Tinker like a Technologist Engage like an Engineer Accentuate like an Artist Manipulate like a Mathmetician If you’re in Vegas today visit the closing Fest and emerge yourself in the world of STEAM.
