Have you taught your teen how to budget their spending? Do they understand the difference between a debit card and credit card? Does your child understand the hidden costs of buying items from a store or online? Often parents don't think of these scenarios. Think ahead to holiday workshops, book fairs, and field trips. ??Many places are going cashless, which puts parents in a tough situation. Knowing what form of payment method to send with your child and teaching them how to use it is key. A few key points to keep in mind. ?? Remember: An items price doesn't include taxes, if applicable. Also, most services don't include a tip. ?? Cash: Using cash to make purchases is ideal and lets you control your spending. However, it can be miss placed, lost, or stolen and you have no way of getting it back. ?? Debit card: While using your debit card is convenient, you will need to make sure you keep track of purchases and account balance. This comes with a risk of overdraft fees if you spend more than what is in your account. Always keep your checkbook register updated and balanced! ?? Credit card: Just like using your debit card, using a credit card is convenient. However, it is considered borrowing because you are using borrowed funds that you will pay back later with interest. It is NEVER too early to start teaching your child about managing money!
