What an incredible start to our learning journey! Over the past two days, one theme stood out to everyone in the group: partnerships were at the core of everything we encountered—no one worked alone. We began with?Jan Morrison, founder and CEO of TIES, and?Ebony Hood,?the director of NEO STEM, who shared how Cleveland’s STEM Ecosystem came to life. Jan and Ebony inspired the group with their vision and passion, emphasizing how a strong foundation of collaboration and shared learning can drive systemic change. At the Cleveland Museum of Art ??, Jeremiah Myers highlighted the connection between art and STEM, while Anne Hribar inspired us with her definition of STEM as “Strategies That Engage Minds.” Her partnerships with the museum showcased how creativity and education can merge to engage students in meaningful ways ?? Day two delved deeper into NEO STEM Ecosystem and the city’s educational landscape. Michele Pomerantz, Cleveland’s Chief of Education, shared the city’s 50-year journey of educational transformation and her personal connection as both a student and a leader. Eric Gordon followed with powerful lessons on leadership, showing how collaboration—even with initial resistance—can lead to breakthrough solutions. He demonstrated how bringing those who initially resisted change to the table and involving them in designing solutions removed barriers and fostered a sense of ownership and collaboration. The day’s visits brought these lessons to life. At Davis Aerospace and Maritime High School ? ??, guided by Timothy Hatfield, MPA, an inspiring MC2 STEM High School graduate and now the program manager at Argonaut, we saw how students are prepared for high-demand careers through innovative, hands-on learning. At the Great Lakes Science Center, Marzell Brown, an engineer with 25 years at Rockwell Automation, shared his journey of inspiring and mentoring the next generation of engineers—a role he sees as his true passion. We wrapped up at one of Verizon’s JumpStart Centers, where Feowyn MacKinnon and Devin Bates demonstrated how their spaces empower entrepreneurs and foster creativity at all ages. As they put it, it’s never too late—or too early—to be an entrepreneur. When asked about their secret to keep kids coming back, they replied, “We love them and let them be who they are.” These first two days have ignited ideas and sparked collaborations that will ripple far beyond this journey.
