What is a sensory diet in terms of occupational therapy? ?? A sensory diet in occupational therapy refers to a personalized plan designed to meet an individual’s sensory needs, aiming to improve emotional, social, and daily functioning skills ?? By incorporating tailored sensory activities and routines, sensory diets help regulate sensory input, promoting better attention, behavior, and overall well-being ?? These diets are beneficial as they address sensory processing difficulties, common in conditions like autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, or sensory processing disorder. By providing the right sensory input at the right time, they can enhance self-regulation, decrease sensory-seeking or sensory-avoiding behaviors, and improve focus and engagement ???? Having a professional create a sensory diet is crucial because it requires a deep understanding of sensory processing and individualized needs ?? Occupational therapists assess sensory profiles, observe behaviors, and collaborate with individuals and caregivers to develop effective strategies. Their expertise ensures that sensory activities are safe, appropriate, and aligned with therapeutic goals, maximizing the benefits for the individual ?? #sensorydiet #sensoryplay #sensoryregulationskills #occupationaltherapy #sensoryactivity #sensoryseeking #sensoryprocessingdisorder

Continuing with our ? Therapist Spotlight ? series: meet Maria Medinilla (M.S. CCC-SLP) ?? 1. How long have you been a therapist? I have been a speech pathologist for 4 years. Prior to being a therapist I worked with school age children as an educator for 15 years. 2. What inspired you to become an SLP? Being a teacher, and seeing students struggle with their communication inspired me to become a speech therapist and have the tools to help them overcome their speech and language impediments. 3. What’s your favorite go-to activity to make therapy sessions enjoyable for kids? I enjoy using books and pretend play to get the students engaged in language rich activities. Working with mini objects, trinkets and picture scenes allows students to engage in the session and expand their vocabulary through play and repetition. 4. Share a fun or surprising fact about yourself that your patients might find amusing. I enjoy creative activities and arts and crafts. Anything else you would like to mention. I am the mom of two girls, soon to be three! ??????
