It's National Proof Reading Day, and we are excited. Nothing like a good editing assignment to put a smile on our faces. Next time you move a misplaced comma or de-capitalize something, just remember that punctuation can save lives: -"Let's eat, Grandma!" is a lovely dinner invitation ??. -"Let's eat Grandma!" is an invitation for Grandma to start running ??♀?.

  • Before spring arrives, we wanted to share this quote that reminds us to find inspiration and warmth even when it's chilly outside. If you're anxiously waiting for warmer weather, longer days and maybe a day or two out of the office, we see you. Our favorite ways to bring a little summer into our winter office days include: -Hosting walking meetings -Spending an extra minute on our cups of coffee and tea -Mixing up our music -Changing our scenery by working from a new spot -Getting up from our desks "One must maintain a little bit of summer, even in the winter." - Henry David Thoreau

  • To get a story right, you need to know who you're talking to, what they care about, and why might care about your agency. Here is a list of 10 questions you need to answer to help you breakup with messaging that not's aligned with your audience. When in doubt, just remember ... it's not [about] you.?

  • Context bridges the margins of understanding that can make or break the success of your messaging. At JPW, we rely on the trusted "benefit statement" to provide succinct value-oriented information, regardless of audience. Follow this simple formula for tasks large and small to quickly bring everyone up to speed and give your messages a greater chance of resonating. Benefit Statement = What you're asking/conveying + the reason + why they should care/need to know.

  • In honor of 3CMA's #GovernmentCommunicatorsDay, we want to take the time to celebrate our fellow government communicators! We see how hard you are working. We understand you and we applaud you. ?? ?? Here at #JPW, many of our teammates are well aware of the demands of the #PIOLife. ?? Our very own founder, Jenny Windle, MPA, served as a PIO for the cities of San Marcos, Vista and Palmdale and oversaw comms efforts at the Port of San Diego. ?? Susanne Bankhead, JPW Partner and SVP, worked for the City of Carlsbad ?? Senior Director Leslie Spring worked for the University of San Diego ?? Senior Manager Courtney Pittam worked for the City of San Diego Many other JPW staffers have worked in "PIO adjacent" roles, too, like our Art Director Molly Schellenger, who was a graphic designer for the City of San Marcos, and our Multimedia Designer Kit Caldwell who worked in the streets department painting traffic lanes for the City of South Bend (okay, that is a bit of a stretch for being PIO adjacent, but it does support our "From Government, For Government" tagline). To all of you out there from all of us here, we thank you for your public service. #GovCommsDay #WeGetGov #GovCommsDay2025

???Government storytelling tip:?Don’t get lost in your own echo chamber. Focus on the WIIFM factor (aka "What's In It For Me?") As government communicators, it’s easy default to jargon, lead with what?we?think is important, or focus on "the what" or "the how" instead of "the why." Storytelling has the most impact when we tailor our messages to our audiences, their WIIFM and what matters most to them. A few tips for audience-centric government communications: ? Show the?why?behind the?what and the how of government work. ? Speak their language, not government-speak. ? Build trust by putting your audience at the center of the story. By shifting from "here’s what we did" to "here’s how this benefits you," we can build trust, inspire action, and strengthen our communities. #GovernmentCommunications #Storytelling #WIIFM #PublicEngagement
