What an amazing few weeks at MISTA's Growth Hack! From our team, Serena Garcia joined MISTA partners and startups to focus on ingredients made with biomass fermentation. The growth hack culminated in a two-day event last week, consisting of a technical symposium, presentations from the 14 discovery teams, and samplings of the culinary creations! Check out AgFunder's latest article, it's packed with interesting information from the event ??https://hubs.li/Q02ZHyfz0 A big thank you from our team to everyone who participated this year. It was a wonderful experience! D'Anne Hayman, Jeff Grogg, Marc Halperin, Celine Schiff-Deb, CCD Innovation, #foodtech #fermentation #growthhack #biomass #futureoffood

Rocelle Clavero-Grabarek, one of our quality & food safety experts, knows that consistent production runs are a key component to a brand's success. She often acts as a liaison between a brand and its co-manufacturer, defining risk areas and discussing process steps on the line. In this month's article ?? https://hubs.li/Q02Z28Fc0, she shares tips and practical advice to create a compliant and sustainable Q&FS program. Rocelle has shown her expertise time and time again, including: ?? Developing in-plant customized food safety training materials for over 50 plants domestically and internationally ?? Evaluating the adequacy of microbial intervention strategies to achieve target log reduction as per regulatory requirements ?? Investigating pathogen contamination events leading to the enhancement of suppliers' food safety/sanitation programs ...and much more! If you're interested in working with Rocelle or other members of our JPG Talent team, send us or David Pelyhes a message! #JPGTalent #FoodandBeverage #CPGIndustry #Quality #FoodSafety #BrandSuccess

Thanks for sharing these valuable insights with us Kevin W.!
I've been speaking with many respected CPG-focused investors in Q4, and some insights have stood out to me (though they may not be new to everyone): Branded CPG businesses are experiencing a significant divide, creating clear "haves" and "have-nots." The "have-nots" have struggled to shift towards profitable business models and are finding it increasingly difficult to secure capital, in some cases its almost impossible. In contrast, the "haves" have successfully pivoted to profitability and now have investors lining up (many of you are probably saying DUH). These profitable brands are less inclined than ever to raise equity. Even the value-add from strategic investors isn't enough to offset the dilution risk. For investors, this means the case for injecting capital must be very compelling to gain access. Unless it creates a direct path to profitability, founders are less open to it (keep in mind, I'm referring to CPG brands in the ~$10M revenue range and up, small businesses still need to raise to get to this point obviously). The "growth-first, profit-later" strategy from ~5 years ago doesn't work as well anymore, which is being reinforced in by the capital markets. Also - the secondary market seems to be hotter than ever. Many strong businesses haven't exited yet for various reasons. Founders seeking liquidity and investors facing fund horizon pressures are turning to the secondary market when it makes sense to cash out. Additionally, in our diligence work at JPG Resources - Food & Beverage Innovation, we've noticed a rising demand for more rigorous ingredient testing. Transparency that goes beyond the label is becoming increasingly critical, likely driven by broader trends: growing distrust of public institutions, a surge in class action claims, and new testing legislation.

Have you ever wondered why we regularly post blog articles, and how on earth we choose our topics? ?? There's SO much to think of and keep track of when you're in the F&B industry, especially as a founder or working with a smaller team. Each month, we write about an issue or topic that multiple clients have come to us recently to help solve. We aim to provide a basic knowledge around the topic, using real-world examples from our JPG Talent experts, along with practical tips and ways to look at the situation. This month, we explain the importance of having an expert review your Q&FS protocol, and dive into the following key steps we use to create a compliant and robust plan: ?? Assessing your coman's current program ?? Developing (and approving!) your brand's Q&FS guide ?? Successfully executing your plan during production runs You can read this month's article here ?? https://hubs.li/Q02YHLzb0 #FoodandBeverage #CPGIndustry #Quality #FoodSafety #Protocol #Blog

What trends did you spot at Supply Side West 2024? ?? We are continuing to see the overlap between food and supplement grow both on the shelf and with the increase in traditional food forward vendors showing up with messaging aimed at the health and wellness space. In general investment, we heard about more capacity coming on line, or available already.? It would seem that comans are open for business and have the capacity to take on new clients. Overall, our team thoroughly enjoyed meeting new companies, chatting with comans about capabilities, and reconnecting with old friends like VIVIFY to talk all things color, sweetener and sugar alternatives. Hope you had a great time as well! #FoodandBeverage #SSWEXPO #Expo #CPGIndustry #HealthandWellness
