This op-ed penned by Center for American Progress Gun Violence Prevention Senior Director Nick Wilson makes the case for continuing investment in Community Violence Intervention (CVI) programs, even as major sources of federal support are about to expire. It also highlights Joyce-supported research on critical state and local government investments in CVI programs. We are proud to support this work and advocate for ongoing investment in it by philanthropy and other institutions. #CommunityViolenceIntervention #CVI #PublicSafety https://lnkd.in/e7zeeUC6

Firearms have become the leading cause of death for US children and teens, and disproportionately impact people of color. The impact of gun violence extends far beyond immediate deaths and injuries, with childhood exposure contributing to mental health challenges and increasing the risk of adult involvement in gun violence. Join us at 11AM Tuesday, November 12th for a webinar exploring the impact and dynamics of firearm violence on youth with Dr. Nicole Kravitz-Wirtz and Dr. Linda Teplin, Ph.D. Our Gun Violence Prevention and Justice Reform Program Director Timothy Daly will moderate. Staying grounded by thinking about a wonderful but busy season and the work that lies ahead. Some highlights were: ??Talking with district leaders at a Domestic Policy Council convening about the need for more timely data and research to address the #chronicabsenteeism crisis. ?? Moderating a panel on #equitablefunding for public schools at the Council of Michigan Foundations conference with MI state senators and our fabulous grantees Advance Illinois & EdTrust-Midwest. ??Sharing the investment strategy behind the #DualEnrollmentResearchFund at the Grantmakers for Education conference. ??Discussing the opportunity to expand access to #dualenrollment to drive Black student success at Chicago State University’s IL Center for Educational Equity convening. ??Hosting a University of Chicago Consortium Investor's Council meeting that highlighted research on #multilinguallearners and where we need more data to better support this rapidly growing, diverse population. ??And finally, for the first time, bringing together my Great Lakes advocates (w/ help from @EdStrategyGroup) to examine regional college-going and workforce trends and trade notes on their work to advance much-needed state policy on #collegeandcareerreadiness. Regardless of who is in what office, students from historically marginalized communities should have access to free, public education that prepares them for college AND career success. The strategies and tactics may differ, but the mission remains. Thankful for the grantees, funder friends, and other partners who are part of this work.

Now, more than ever, protecting independent journalism is crucial to preserve transparency and accountability. Funders, join the upcoming MIF briefing on November 12 to discuss how we can protect and empower journalists in these challenging times. #Philanthropy #FunderBriefing #Journalism
Dear colleagues, Like us, many of you are likely experiencing some combination of concern, sadness and fear about the outcome of the 2024 presidential election. As the Columbia Journalism Review?writes?today, “A second Trump administration is poised to be devastating to journalism.” We understand the clear and present danger to individual journalists and the institutions they represent.?Now, it is imperative that funders step up to safeguard this work.?Your role in helping to reclaim these narratives is crucial in empowering journalists, filmmakers and storytellers to investigate, report, and hold power accountable. By investing in independent journalism and storytelling, you are investing in the truth, transparency, and the very foundation of our democratic society. In November 2016—in response to funders’ concerns about what a Trump presidency would mean for journalism—MIF started organizing monthly calls to help journalism and media funders make their work more effective and efficient through peer learning and strategic partnerships. We’ve been hosting these calls ever since. In addition to our monthly call schedule, MIF is also offering the opportunity to join a special funder briefing on how we can and should move forward with our work under a second Trump term. Please join us for an online meeting on Tuesday, November 12, from 2-3 p.m. ET.?The briefing will provide a platform for funders to discuss strategic responses between now and Jan. 20, big picture threats to the field, and what the field is already doing to mobilize efforts. Please note: You do not need to be actively funding media and journalism to attend this call. We encourage you to share this invitation with any funding peers in your network who are curious about the role media and journalism can play in supporting democracy. Register?here: https://lnkd.in/e2Xg3bSR Take great care. We hope to see you next week. —Media Impact Funders
