In 1986 when I stumbled into the University of Virginia in pursuit of my Masters degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, my life was altered for good when I met Rita Schnipke as she was putting the finishing touches on her PhD here at UVA. Rita's research and her pioneering approach to the use of the finite element methods to solve the Navier-Stokes equation was world class. She also asked me to play on her inner tube water polo team at UVA ?? . Especially for a PhD student she was a ton of fun! She reminded me over the next 38 years that I "rode her coattails" to my M.S. degree as my thesis involved the application of her code. Quite true. She taught me much. We got a chance to build a company over 13 years (Blue Ridge Numerics, 1999-2011) together and it was an amazing run as we built an indomitable culture obsessed with making CFD more acessible for mere mortals. Rita graciously and confidently passed away on her 72nd birthday on May 25, 2024. She was indeed a giant and legend in the field of computational fluid flow. A 2-day, 200 mile bike ride. Not a race! We look to build community and provide for the Hungry and Thirsty
关于我们
The Journey of Awesomeness (JoA) is a 2-day, 200 mile bike ride through this amazing slice of the creation that we call Central Virginia. It is not a race! Beautiful, scenic, rolling hills on mainly country roads. The main mission of the JoA remains unchanged since our birth in 2015. We seek to; - provide for the Hungry (www.brafb.org) and Thirsty (www.worldserveintl.org) - build community and relationship - have fun - increase fitness If any of that sounds like fun, come join us. We believe that all are welcome, nobody is perfect, and anything is possible.

All, as a LinkedIn skeptic I enter the waters with my first post in a while. In 2015, I called a couple mates here in Charlottesville, VA and asked them what they thought about starting a bike ride to raise a few bucks for the Hungry and Thirsty? I had just experienced the Pan-Mass Challenge, a $60M monster fundraiser with 7,000 riders. It was a blast and an event that moves the needle for cancer research. So....we started the Journey of Awesomeness. As a wise-ass friend said at the time, "wow, I can't believe that url was not taken". Over the last 9 years we have raised >$1.5M and moved the needle in our own wee way. The pillars of our ride have always been; relationship, community. fun, fitness, epic smack talk, and supporting our Hungry and Thirsty brethren. So to all my LinkedIn "friends" out there I make a request for the Hungry and Thirsty on behalf of the Journey of Awesomeness. This is our final year. Year 10. It is an event that has given me sooo much community, fitness, and fun, and I thank God for the people and $$ the JoA has brought into my life, and the >1M meals to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and the 45,000 Thirsty brothers and sisters that now have access to clean water through $$ raised for WorldServe International. Amazing Grace! Really. The pic below and this 4-minute video from 2018 captures the essence of the event if you want a closer look. https://lnkd.in/eF_RKT53 And finally, here is the ask. My personal fundraising page is here. Thanks for the consideration. Let me know how I can reciprocate: https://lnkd.in/e3e2S9eZ And to all y'all that have supported this thing over the years, huge hugs and thanks.
