What Steps Can Be Taken to Ensure Equitable Care for All NICU Families? Experiencing the NICU as a parent can be incredibly challenging, especially when compounded by racial and ethnic discrimination. This latest study in the Journal of Patient Experience explores how racism impacts families in the NICU. Through surveys and open-ended responses from parents, the study reveals that discrimination often manifests subtly as neglectful care, with parents noting disparities in attention and treatment based on race. The findings highlight the need to address implicit biases and ensure equitable treatment for all families, promoting a more inclusive healthcare environment. What are the emotional impacts of Long COVID, and how can we address them in patient care? This article examines the broader emotional and psychological toll of Long COVID, revealing implications beyond the individual patient experience. The study shows that Long COVID triggers significant feelings of loss, not just in physical health but also in mental well-being, social connections, and personal identity. The wider implications of these findings underscore the urgent need for a model of care that focuses on emotional resilience and support for patients coping with long-term health challenges. Key Insights: ?? Loss Across Multiple Domains: Long COVID patients report profound losses in physical health, mental well-being, social connections, family roles, and self-identity, requiring comprehensive care that goes beyond physical symptoms. ?? Emotional Toll Mirrors Grief: Many patients experience grief similar to the Kübler-Ross stages (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance), highlighting the psychological burden of living with persistent health issues. ?? Need for Mental Health Integration: The emotional impact of Long COVID underscores the importance of incorporating mental health services, such as counseling and peer support, into treatment plans to address anxiety, depression, and isolation. ?? Broader Implications for Chronic Illness Care: The findings suggest that healthcare providers can use these insights to improve care for other chronic, invisible illnesses by integrating mental health support, palliative care, and grief counseling into regular care protocols. Transforming Health and Care Experiences with Research and Actionable-Insights (Keynote Speaker, Advising Partner, Health Communication Expert)

Call for Submissions: “Exploring the Relationship between Patient Experience, Health Outcomes, and Value-based Care”. #ICHOM2024 In collaboration with The International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM), The Journal of Patient Experience invites article submissions for this Special Collection. Declining quality and life expectancies, along with rapidly aging population segments, have accelerated interest in Value-Based Healthcare (VBHC). As a transformative patient-centered healthcare delivery model, VBHC is defined as: “the measured improvement in a person’s health outcomes for the cost of achieving that improvement”, rather than the volume of procedures or services. Patient experience intersects with both outcomes and cost as an integral component to advance value in healthcare delivery. The Special Collection will feature the following critical impact areas aimed at disentangling these concepts and demonstrating how patient experience and outcomes together accelerate value. Metrics: Utilizing patient reported health outcomes measures (PROMs) and health patient reported experience measures (PREMs) to advance the value-based health care delivery model. Care delivery solutions: Designing care delivery solutions that are inclusive, equitable, sustainable, and focused on what matters most to individuals and families. Workforce: Supporting the health care workforce by returning health care to its purpose—better health for each and for all. #VBHC #VBC #PatientExperience #PatientEngagement #ValueBasedHealthCare

How can patient stories reshape healthcare and reduce burnout? This article explores the impact of using a patient-recorded audio intervention to improve communication and empathy within healthcare settings. Patients respond to four key questions about their personal preferences, what brings them joy, and how they wish to be cared for. These recordings are then integrated into the electronic health record for healthcare staff to access. The study found that the majority of medical staff reported increased empathy and improved communication with both patients and their families. Key Takeaways: ?? Improved Empathy: The use of brief patient-recorded audio files significantly increased empathy among healthcare staff, with 53% of respondents feeling more connected to their patients after listening. ?? Enhanced Communication: The TIMS intervention improved communication between healthcare teams and patients' families, with 63% of staff reporting better interactions after engaging with the audio files. ?? Personalized Care: By integrating personal stories into the electronic health record, medical teams gained deeper insights into patients' preferences, enhancing the delivery of more personalized, patient-centered care. ?? Reduced Burnout: The audio files helped reduce distress for some healthcare professionals, potentially easing burnout by fostering a stronger emotional connection to patients. What additional steps can healthcare professionals take to involve caregivers more effectively in the decision-making process? Gastrostomy tube insertion is a life-changing decision for families, but the right support can make all the difference. This study surveyed caregivers to understand their experiences and the challenges they face. The results? Caregivers overwhelmingly praised the clarity of information provided by medical teams but pointed out areas where they needed more support, particularly post-insertion. Managing the gastrostomy tube and concerns about their child’s oral intake were top challenges. Key Takeaways: ?? High Satisfaction with Medical Guidance: Caregivers reported high satisfaction with the information provided by healthcare professionals about the gastrostomy procedure, particularly when they understood the reasons for the tube insertion. ?? Emotional and Logistical Challenges: While many caregivers felt relief after the procedure, they also experienced stress related to managing the gastrostomy tube and maintaining their child’s oral intake. ?? Importance of Peer Support: Nearly half of the caregivers connected with others in similar situations before the procedure, and most found peer support reassuring, highlighting the need for formalized peer support networks. ?? Empowering Caregivers: Caregivers expressed concerns about managing complications, suggesting that healthcare teams could focus on providing more resources, training, and tools to help them independently manage minor technical issues. This study emphasizes the importance of providing comprehensive, timely information and peer support to caregivers to alleviate concerns. How can fostering personal connection reduce burnout and compassion fatigue among healthcare professionals? This article assesses the impact of the Tell Me More (TMM) program on healthcare professionals’ connectedness with their patients. The program encourages meaningful dialogue between healthcare providers and patients to understand the patient beyond their diagnosis and illness. Researchers surveyed and interviewed healthcare professionals to measure how TMM impacted their relationships with patients. Providers reported feeling they knew their patients better, and patients felt the same about them. This deepened connection helps separate patients from their illness, creating space for more compassionate care and improving patient outcomes. Key Takeaaways: ?? Enhanced Provider-Patient Connection: The "Tell Me More?" (TMM) program significantly improves how well healthcare providers feel they know their patients, fostering stronger personal relationships and more patient-centered care. ?? Reduced Burnout and Compassion Fatigue: By encouraging deeper connections between providers and patients, TMM helps alleviate feelings of burnout and compassion fatigue among healthcare professionals. ?? Improved Care for Non-Verbal Patients: TMM facilitates better understanding of non-verbal patients by involving their families, offering insights into their personal lives that improve the quality of care. ?? Positive Impact on Communication with Support Networks: The program strengthens communication between healthcare providers and patients' support networks, enriching the care process by understanding the patient's social context. What Steps Can Be Taken to Ensure Equitable Care for All NICU Families? This article explores how racial and ethnic discrimination affects families in the NICU. Through surveys and open-ended responses from parents, the study reveals that racism often manifests subtly as neglectful care, with parents noting disparities in attention and treatment based on race. The findings highlight the need for NICUs to address implicit biases and ensure equitable treatment for all families, promoting a more inclusive healthcare environment. Key Takeaways: ?? Coexistence of Care and Harm: Parents in the NICU often experience a mixture of compassionate care and harmful neglect, with some attributing negative interactions to racial or ethnic discrimination. This duality highlights a complex environment where quality of care is inconsistent. ?? Racism as Neglectful Care: Instances of racism often manifest subtly through neglectful treatment. Parents reported disparities in care based on racial concordance, where infants of the same race as NICU staff sometimes received preferential treatment, especially during critical care moments like feeding. ?? Power Imbalance in Advocacy: The study highlights the significant power differential between NICU staff and parents, particularly during parental advocacy. Parents often felt dismissed or undervalued when voicing concerns, which exacerbated feelings of powerlessness and impacted their ability to advocate effectively for their infants. ?? Need for Equity in NICU Care: The findings emphasize the urgent need for NICUs to address implicit biases and reinforce equitable care practices. By fostering awareness and training on racial sensitivity, NICUs can improve interactions with families and create a more inclusive care environment.
