  • From the Collection: Louise Bourgeois Bourgeois was a French-American artist renowned for her drawings, prints, and abstract sculptures, including her arachnid-like Maman works. Born in Paris, France, she emigrated to?the?United States in 1938 and studied at?the?Art Students League in New York. In her artistic practice, Bourgeois explored human emotion and material diversity, blending?these ideas into her own unique form of abstraction. Growing up, her parents had a complicated and strained relationship. Bourgeois’ feelings towards?these tensions as well as her own relationship with each parent, appear throughout her work. She often used text and color in her prints and drawings to suggest abstract psychological and emotional states. Bourgeois died in 2010 in New York at?the?age of 98, and her work is now part of museum and private?collections around?the?world. ? Jordan Schnitzer began collecting Bourgeois’ work in 1999. • From the Collection: Mickalene Thomas Mickalene Thomas is a visionary contemporary artist whose work focuses on the depiction of African American women. Perhaps most well-known are her elaborate collage-inspired paintings embellished with rhinestones, enamel, and colorful acrylics. Her depictions of African American women explore a spectrum of black female beauty and sexual identity while constructing images of femininity and power. Thomas combines photography and printmaking, using imagery from publications such as Jet from the 1960s through the 1980s. In this work, each element of the collage was individually printed and hand-assembled, a process that took over two years to complete. Jordan Schnitzer began collecting Thomas’ work in 2007, and the collection now includes over 30 of her works. A selection of this work will be included in the forthcoming exhibition Global Icons: Local Spotlight at the Portland Art Museum, Portland, Ore., opening Fall 2025. ??? • From the Collection: Lorna Simpson, Details (half learned) Lorna Simpson is an American photographer and multimedia artist who examines contemporary America’s relationship with gender, identity, history, and culture. Rising to prominence in the 1990s, her pioneering approach to conceptual photography reshaped the medium and re-examined what photographic practice could achieve. Her striking juxtapositions of text and staged images confront the nature of representation and exemplify her conceptual approach to her practice. Much of Simpson’s work includes African American figures, exploring the vocabulary of today’s society with the history of representation. In addition to her photographic practice, her oeuvre includes film, video, painting, drawing, and sculpture. ? In this 1996 work, Simpson uses a twentieth-century portrait, cropped to obscure her subject's face and instead highlight the hand holding a telephone. The caption “half learned” appears to provide potential insight into the individual's identity. However, with no other visual clues, Simpson encourages an ambiguous reading of work, opening dialogue about the way society perceives such partial narrative, particularly the stereotypes surrounding Black self-representation.? ? Jordan Schnitzer began collecting Simpson’s work in 2003. The collection now includes over 50 works, which have traveled to Florida, Utah, Indiana, Washington, D.C., and California, among other places. Recently, her work was highlighted in the traveling exhibition Positive Fragmentation, organized by the National Museum of Women in the Arts in collaboration with the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation.? ? ???
