Today, the FDA approved a new drug regimen which helps reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence for patients with early-stage disease. Adding ribociclib to the standard hormone therapy resulted in a relative reduction in the recurrence rate by as much as 25%. Kayla Kafka-Peterson, BSN, RN, a radiation oncology supervisor in the UCLA Brachytherapy Division, discovered a need for an extensive brachytherapy training program specific to nursing. When professional chef Sonny Sweetman's blurry vision led to a melanoma diagnosis, his UCLA Health doctors devised a treatment plan to spare his eye. A year after treatment finished, doctors found the cancer had spread to Sonny Sweetman's liver. 12 years ago, Maui resident Jamil Newirth was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, known as glioblastoma. He was 32 years old and told he had about 17 months to live. Jamil beat the odds through a clinical trial using a novel personalized cancer vaccine, developed by neurosurgeon Linda Liau, MD, PhD (David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA). Now 44, Jamil is a practicing attorney in Maui and is dedicated to raising both awareness and hope for others undergoing treatment through his nonprofit, UVSC - Us Versus Cancer. Chef Sonny Sweetman is known for his unwavering culinary artistry, having worked in kitchens for Oprah Winfrey, Wolfgang Puck, and more. In early 2022, when he began experiencing blurriness in his vision, he figured it was just a part of aging. After being referred to a specialist immediately, Sonny, 53, was diagnosed with uveal melanoma, a rare type of cancer that occurs in the eye. As he was introduced to a team of specialists, the Hepzato Kit procedure, a liver-directed treatment, was approved by the FDA and brought to Sweetman’s attention. A research grant of $800,000 from the V Foundation will help two UCLA scientists as they work to discover new methods to treat and prevent a severe form of kidney cancer associated with a hereditary syndrome. The research project, led by Dr. Heather Christofk, director of Basic and Translational Research at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Dr. Brian Shuch, director of the Kidney Cancer Program and the Alvin & Carrie Meinhardt Endowed Chair in Kidney Cancer Research at UCLA, is focused on hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell cancer (HLRCC), a genetic condition that leads to aggressive kidney cancer and other serious health conditions.
