Angie Hicks is a true inspiration —a reminder that sometimes the only thing standing in our way is ourselves. Her story proves that taking a risk, even when it feels uncertain, can lead to something incredible!???
"Everything changed when I realized the only thing holding me back was myself." Stories about accidental entrepreneurs are pretty common. Stories about reluctant entrepreneurs — not so much. Then again, there's Angie Hicks: A 20-something, fresh out of college, eager for the safe, paycheck life. But she had caught the eye of a VC. He had an idea and saw something in her she did not. "'Angie, I have an opportunity for you," Hicks recalls for Catalyst. "'I think we should start a business.'" Angie’s List, now Angi, is a powerhouse service matching trusted trades like electricians and plumbers with homeowners. It's also the story of a young person with an old soul who took the advice of her grandfather to take a risk on herself when she had plenty of time to start over — if she had to. "There's so much opportunity when you're in your 20s. Even if you're not a risk taker, that particular time in your life, it's a great time to explore, and in the end, it could lead to something great," Hicks said. "Use those early years to explore 'cause you never know what you might discover. Had I not explored, I'd be a consultant."
