Jones Studio and their clients have been widely published and honored with over 190 design awards, for 50 built projects. In 2014 they were awarded the Arizona Forward Crescordia Award for Environmental Stewardship and were ranked 21st in The Architect 50 and 6th in Sustainability. They are the proud recipients of the 2016 GSA Design Excellence Program Honor Award in Architecture for the Mariposa Land Port of Entry. Local architecture and landscape studios Jones Studio and Chris Winters Associates have converted an Italian Gothic revival-style church in Downtown Phoenix into Monroe Street Abbey, an event space. Originally built in 1929, the church was nearly destroyed by a fire in 1984 and was abandoned and declared a hazard by the city. A local non-profit organization, Housing Opportunity Center, purchased the site a few years ago to launch its restoration. As part of this splendid adaptive reuse project, the architects preserved and stabilized the building's original architecture and added new elements (notably second and third-floor balconies overlooking the central courtyard). I note that the courtyard used to be an enclosed auditorium until the 1984 fire destroyed the roof, which gives you an idea of the extent of the destruction. The restored courtyard has been transformed into a 600-person capacity performance and events area, while surrounding rooms have been restored into a ballroom, greenroom and areas for future galleries, restaurants, studios and offices. The architects will continue to restore the east and north wings for additional leasable space. I really appreciate how the architects left some elements seemingly untouched and juxtaposed contemporary materials with the historic shell, as it give a unique character to the space! See links in comments for more information, great videos of before-and-after work (which will give you an idea of the scope of work), and pictures by Bill Timmerman. In June 2024, Monroe Street Abbey was part of the 8 inductees at the 2024 Arizona Governor's Heritage Preservation Honor Awards. The Arizona Preservation Foundation summarized the adaptive reuse project as follows: “In the heart of downtown Phoenix, the Monroe Street Abbey is emerging as a testament to the resilience of history and the power of community. Constructed in 1929, this architectural marvel exemplifies the Italian Gothic revival style. The building experienced a devastating fire in 1984 that destroyed the roof structure and threatened the future of the building. For many years it was on the Arizona Preservation Foundation’s Most Endangered List. [...] Key to the Abbey's revival has been the meticulous preservation of its architectural elements. The stabilization aimed to preserve historical elements in their current state, showing the passage of time. The rehabilitation and improvements tie the Monroe Street Abbey's different lives together: a church, a ruin, and now a new community gathering space.” Congratulations to all the teams involved in this project. I am sure it was quite an undertaking for the non-profit organization to raise the funds and garner the support of public authorities and the citizen. What a beauty ! I really appreciate that this historic religious building is owned by a non-profit local organization and remains part of the community spaces. #realestate #architecture #design #adaptivereuse #phoenix #immobilier

During a recent visit to Phoenix, I toured Jones Studio and experienced its inspiring atmosphere. Brian Farling guided us through the studio, sharing insights into their design process and approach to client communication. Jones Studio deeply roots its practice in sustainability and sensitivity to the desert climate, focusing on creating spaces that enhance human experiences while respecting the natural landscape. The workspace feels like a hidden oasis in the desert—an inviting, understated presence that mirrors Jones Studio's design philosophy. With abundant natural light and carefully chosen materials, the open layout fosters a collaborative environment where creativity and teamwork thrive. Every element, from the layout to the atmosphere, emphasizes their commitment to open communication and sustainable design, fueling the studio's ability to produce thoughtful, resilient architecture. Jones Studio is known for balancing functionality with environmental stewardship. It often incorporates passive cooling, natural ventilation, and regionally sourced materials to create resilient, climate-responsive architecture. Observing their approach and learning about their client-focused process offered valuable insights into designing for arid landscapes, underscoring the importance of both climate and community-centered design. We’re in great company on this year’s Forbes Top Residential Architects In America list! This particular piece showcases our Elk Ridge Passive House in Missoula, Montana—a commission by the owner of Glo Fenestration and designed and built to Passive House standards. We’re particularly partial to their description of Eddie Jones’ work.

Discover how Jones Studio transformed the ruins of a former Baptist church in Phoenix into a community-centered garden and event venue. They peered through the boarding of what was left of the church. What they saw, back in 2010, was an open space where there had once been pews in which the hundreds of congregants of Phoenix’s First Baptist Church gathered. The structure was now open to the sky and partially covered with weeds. “We found our site,” Arizona architect Eddie Jones of Jones Studio remembers exclaiming. Together with fellow architect Michael P. Johnson and landscape architect Chris Winters, he was looking for an opportunity to try out “armature architecture,” an idea developed by “organic” architect Herb Greene that posits buildings should be open constructions allowing for flexible uses over time. In the former evangelical Baptist church, they saw the potential to do so. https://lnkd.in/dN-rpu_n
