One our favorite things we create every year is the JDI "Book Book" - a collection of our team's favorite reads over the past year and the books that most stuck with us. We published this year's list in Superposition last week, but you can also stop buy our office and pick up a physical copy (which includes past years' lists as well!) https://lnkd.in/g2T3wkwz

We have reimagined Superposition, our newsletter. Everything here is different from our previous iteration and, at the same time, an experiment. You'll learn more about who we are and what we think about. You'll also see how we try, discover, fail, and learn our way through what Superposition can become. What remains the same? Our commitment to science design and communications and our curiosity about the world around us. Superposition continues to explore what's possible amid what is. Whether you're a fellow science enthusiast, partner, co-conspirator, or simply someone who gets excited about discovering what's at the edge of our collective understanding, there's a place for you here. Sign up and follow along: https://lnkd.in/gw55FMcS.

Celebrating 10 years with our Head of Finance, Justin Davis! Beyond managing JDI's finances, Justin brings quick wit and an unshakeable calm to our team. Thank you for a fantastic decade, Justin!
Feeling so fortunate at JDI to be celebrating our 10th anniversary with Head of Finance Justin Davis. Hilarious, calming, and reliable are a few of the ways his colleagues describe him. We trust him with payroll, insurance, budgets, receivables, and many more critical financial functions -- but his wisdom and insight extend far beyond his role. Justin, thank you for spending 10 years with us! Photo with Justin's wonderful wife Irisa Davis + JDI's Rebecca Ewing at JDI's anniversary party in 2015 . . . which was a competition including trivia, blind taste tests, and a cornhole tournament.

In their annual attempt to be hip and relevant, the Oxford English Dictionary chose “Brain Rot†as their 2014 Word of the Year. It’s a good choice, considering all things 2024, but our own Doug Freeman argues there is a better option: “Enshittification.†Brain Rot puts the focus on the user, on us. We’re the ones consuming this low-quality content that is rotting our brains, and that’s our fault. Enshittification, on the other hand, puts the onus on the systems that uphold, circulate, and, most importantly, profit from Brain Rot.

Congratulations to @Aurelia Institute on being named one of Fast Company's "Next Big Things in Tech" for 2024! Fast Company recognized Aurelia Institute's TESSERAE, self-assembling tiles that create adaptable living spaces in microgravity and can support the foundation for humanity's future in space. Although small, Aurelia's team showed that revolutionary innovation doesn't always require massive organizations but focused, passionate groups with a clear vision. We look forward to seeing what you achieve next!

A-Alpha Bio hit two significant milestones: Their experimental platform AlphaSeq reached one billion protein interactions measured - generating more data in a day than what exists in public databases. They publicly released AlphaBind, an open-source ML model that will help scientists with antibody engineering. Built on NVIDIA BioNeMo, AlphaBind is now available to researchers worldwide under an MIT license. AlphaSeq's blog post:

David Baker was announced last week as one of this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry winners. Baker's groundbreaking work in protein design has revolutionized the field. His leadership and mentorship at the University of Washington and beyond have inspired countless scientists and paved the way for innovative biotechnology companies like our client A-Alpha Bio. We're thrilled to see this recognition, as Baker's work has been instrumental in advancing protein engineering, and his contributions continue to shape the future of biomedicine. Cheers!
