Are you an experimental biologist or budding computational biologist? Register by April 7 to join us for a five-day workshop on data and workflows for the JGI's Integrated Microbial Genomes and Microbiomes (IMG/M) web-based platform. IMG/M provides access to the wealth of public microbiome sequence data and enables users to analyze these data with existing bioinformatic methods — bridging the gap from sequence to biology. WHAT: MGM Workshop WHEN: 4/28–5/2 WHERE: The IGB at Berkeley Lab INFO: mgm.jgi.doe.gov The Society for Science at User Research Facilities Nikos Kyrpides Rekha S.

Feeling extremely honored to be recognized in this year’s AAAS Fellow list. But the honor and my gratitude really goes to all the amazing people I’ve had the privilege of leading and working with at the Joint Genome Institute and during my time in industry who’ve made my career so enjoyable. Thank you!
Each year, AAAS recognizes scientists around the world for their distinguished achievements toward the advancement or applications of science … We’re honored to have two of our very own make this impressive 2024 Fellows List. Congratulations to Joint Genome Institute's Director Nigel Mouncey and Phillip Messersmith (Phillip M.), a faculty senior scientist in our Materials Sciences Division. Congrats and welcome to our new users! This year's crop of New Investigators, part of our #CommunityScience Program will investigate a diverse array of projects — including the genomic dynamics of biofuel-producing fungi ??, the effects of biochar on rhizosphere microbiomes ?? , and the metabolic pathways of algae. They will harness JGI capabilities such as metatranscriptomics and environmental DNA sequencing to explore microbial and plant interactions across unique ecosystems, from alpine soils to tropical glaciers. Congratulations and good luck to the JGI's Yumary Vasquez, part of our Single Cell Research Group, who will be competing in the National Lab SLAM in Washington D.C. tomorrow, March 5. You can livestream the event here: https://lnkd.in/gnf_gBxV. Yumary will speak about "going viral" in a BIG way — specifically how infections from giant viruses can impact our water, air, soil, even the gut microbiome! To qualify, she previously placed first in the Berkeley Lab SLAM, and second place at the Bay Area SLAM.
