In Nature Magazine this week, a team led by Mikayla Borton and Kelly Wrighton at Colorado State University cataloged the microbiome of rivers covering 90% of the watersheds in the continental U.S. "A project of this scale really demonstrates the power of open, distributed science to address big questions about how microbes impact ecosystem processes.” -Emiley Eloe-Fadrosh, JGI Metagenome Program head and National Microbiome Data Collaborative lead PI. The work was partly enabled through the JGI's Community Science Program. #BioEGSB's Trent Northen is leading the conversation to develop community standards for researching synthetic communities (#SynComs) in plant–microbiota. Synthetic communities are increasingly being used, yet, the lack of community standards limits the efficiency and progress in this important area of research. In 2024, the DOE Joint Genome Institute and?Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University piloted an internship program enabled by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) RENEW initiative — which provides the next-generation workforce with hands-on learning opportunities and mentorship at DOE national laboratories and user facilities. This brought A&M students to the JGI to work on groundbreaking science. Undergraduate student Ti'Yanna Watson?and graduate student LaMonika Dent?worked with JGI mentors Yi Zhai and John Vogel on researching the effects of?Brachypodium distachyon?plant root exudates on the plant microbiome.??Students also participated in workshops, hackathons and networking events. Congratulations to the JGI's Yumary Vasquez for placing second place in last week's Bay Area SLAM event. Yumary spoke about going "viral" in a BIG way — specifically how infections from giant viruses can impact our water, air, soil, even the gut microbiome!
