Founder @Supra | Helping product leaders accelerate their careers through peer learning and community | Ex-Asana
Your CEO has no clear vision. The company is drifting aimlessly. As a product leader, it's suddenly on you to right the ship. Sound familiar? You're not alone. First-time founders often stumble here, especially those without product backgrounds. They have ideas, sure. But a cohesive, inspiring vision? That's the challenge. How do you guide them without overstepping? Where do you even start? Recently, a Supra member facing this exact situation reached out to our community for advice. The insights shared in our Slack were gold: 1. Understand the Difference Between Vision and Strategy Before diving in, ensure you're not conflating vision with strategy. A vision paints the picture of your ultimate destination, while a strategy outlines the steps to get there. Sometimes, working on the strategy can organically clarify the vision. 2. Start with the "Why" and Ensure Authenticity Begin by asking probing questions: If the perfect vision were written overnight, what would change? What problems would it solve? Remember, a vision must be something the CEO genuinely believes in. Without authentic conviction, it won't inspire the team or stakeholders. 3. Collaborate and Gather Insights Internally Bring key leaders together for collaborative workshops. Have them individually answer critical questions, then share and discuss as a group. This collective input can help unify diverse perspectives into a cohesive vision. 4. Visualize the Future Sometimes, words aren't enough. Create storyboards or even commission conceptual ads to illustrate how your product or service impacts customers. This exercise not only clarifies the vision but also uncovers gaps or unrealistic assumptions. 5. Align the Vision with Your Audience Remember, your vision needs to resonate with different stakeholders. Whether it's employees seeking inspiration or investors looking for returns, tailor your vision to align with their interests and aspirations. Crafting a compelling vision is hard, and you might not nail it on the first go. It requires iteration, patience, introspection, collaboration, and, sometimes, a structured approach to bring clarity to abstract ideas. Have you helped a founder craft their company vision? What challenges did you face, and what strategies worked best??
