I know a conversation is going to be good when it starts off with a discussion about The Alchemist and the role of spirituality in building a company... It was a lot of fun going a level deeper with Brent Macon, chatting about company building, the why behind the support Givers provides to family caregivers, and our favorite Atlanta food (shoutout Falafel King!).

Family caregivers deserve a megaphone. We are proud to advocate for the continued inclusion of caregivers in the expansion of sustainable long term care programs. Givers CEO Max Mayblum wrote an analysis of Vice President Kamala Harris' proposal for Medicare to cover long term care, and why it is important for family caregivers to be included.
“Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” The current system to care for older adults is broken. Medicare–our federal health insurance system for people over the age of 65–doesn't cover long term care, and only offers sparse support to family caregivers. 54% of healthcare bankruptcies are caused by long term care. The only alternative for millions? Spending down into poverty in order to qualify for Medicaid, which does cover long term care. Pretty untenable. The system has long neglected this issue and the millions of family caregivers that are the safety net holding it together. Like so many in the long term care world, I was enthused last week to see the Harris campaign propose the coverage of home care by Medicare, which covers over 67 million older adults, with roughly 4 million Americans enrolling every year. But yet again, something was missing. Despite framing the proposal as relief for family caregivers, it omitted whether or not family members would actually be able to get paid by Medicare for the work that they do. We put our heads together at Givers to define the future, so we don't repeat our history. #medicareathome #longtermcare #caregivers #caregiving #harris

"Let's say there's a family out there that doesn't want to put mom or dad into a facility or doesn't have a long-term care policy, what are their options?" Eric Jorgensen, founder of Special Needs Navigator, asks Givers' Founder Max Mayblum on the latest episode of the ABCs of Disability Planning podcast. This is an increasingly common question. Not only do 90%+ people want to age in place, but we have the baby boomer generation growing into the 65+ category, the largest acceleration of this population we've ever seen. Behind that, smaller and smaller generations to actually provide the care.?On top of that, we have a labor crisis in the care market and institutional settings are becoming more and more cost prohibitive, so the trend that Givers’ sees is that family caregiving is the only tenable solution. Friends, Throughout my adult life I’ve sought common ground issues to rally people around. As Malisa, myself and our contemporaries are now at the general midpoint of our lives (hopefully!) it seems as though most of our friends are dealing with aging parents and some of the challenges that presents. My guest on my latest podcast is Max Mayblum who is the founder and CEO of Givers. Motivated by his personal experience with family caregiving and his background in healthtech, Max started the company on a mission to help caregivers get long overdue support and resources. He is a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA) and is passionate about helping caregivers find joy and connection in their role. Max is a graduate of Emory and in 2023 was named by Forbes Magazine as a member of their “30 Under 30” list. As former first lady Rosalyn Carter famously said “there are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers and those who will need caregivers.” I honestly believe that providing care for our loved ones is truly a common ground issue that at some point in our lives will impact us all and I hope this interview will help many of you navigate the process today or when that day ultimately comes!
