We are honored to be the technology partner for AICPA's apprenticeship program for Accounting and Finance Associates. According to Joanne Fiore, AICPA & CIMA Vice President of Pipeline and Apprenticeships, the program responds to market feedback by helping to recruit entry-level positions and upskill individuals in these roles to add more value and achieve greater mobility. Research conducted by BuildWithin suggests a significant shortage of accountants and bookkeepers, with a gap of around 300,000 professionals compared to 2020, primarily due to workforce reshuffles and baby boomer retirements. How do apprenticeships foster continuous learning and contribute to creating a more inclusive tech ecosystem? We asked the experts. #NationalApprenticeshipWeek

In 2021, apprenticeships were a new concept for most universities, and there was no playbook. As soon as we asked Jim Chung, former EVP at the GW Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship to embrace the concept, he did it without hesitation. Jim helped us navigate the university processes and got this model approved and implemented for the first time at GWU. Being first is not easy but is necessary, and we are grateful for his bold leadership to adopt the model. Jim’s pragmatism led to hiring Mohammad Dembele, a DC resident who we met through DC Department of Employment Services (thank you Mr. Shannon and Dr. Unique Morris-Hughes , PhD) without a tech background, as an operations apprentice. The dual education track that apprenticeships allow and the generosity of GWU made it possible for Mohammed to continue his education at GWU for free. He is now the operations lead at the office of Innovation and a cyber security student with zero school debt. Another success story is Ryan Salandy, who advanced from apprentice to manager in just one year and now leads the Web team at the Department of Engineering at GWU. The success continues with Wince Glory, their third apprentice, who has not graduated yet, but a little bird told us he will receive an offer to stay after his apprenticeship ends ?? . All three, Mohammed, Wince, and Ryan are intelligent, driven, and full of grit. They just needed a chance, Jim and Sean Connelly (apprentices manager) provided. Jim has moved on to other innovations, and we are fortunate to now work with Bob Smith, who is the Associate Vice Provost and head of the GW Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Jim and Bob exemplify how pragmatic leadership is essential when taking innovative approaches. Someone has to be first. Thank you, Jim Chung, for your leadership and for leaving a lasting mark! Thank you Sean Connelly for the many hours of mentoring and coaching. ?? Monday, I had the privilege of attending an inspiring event celebrating?National Apprenticeship Week?hosted by Northern California Apprenticeship Network at Laney College. It was amazing to connect with a passionate community dedicated to expanding?registered apprenticeships?across various fields and levels to increase opportunities for Bay Area residents. One of the most eye-opening stats I learned: Only?1 in 4 California high school graduates?goes on to graduate college. That leaves?3 out of 4 graduates?in need of opportunities to access middle-class jobs or higher. Apprenticeships are a powerful bridge to help fill that gap. While California has excelled in creating apprenticeship pathways in the?building trades, we’ve only scratched the surface of what’s possible in fields like?tech,?media arts,?public safety, and so much more. For employers who might think apprenticeships are a heavy lift, the benefits speak for themselves: ? 95% retention?– apprentices tend to stay with their company five years post-apprenticeship ? Financial incentives?– there are fiscal benefits for companies building apprenticeship programs ? Diversity?– tapping into a wider, more inclusive talent pool ?The ROI?and the long-term value is undeniable? It’s time we think bigger about what apprenticeships can achieve and how they can transform industries beyond traditional norms.
