Meet Manik Surtani, Block’s Head of Open Source and 12-year company veteran who’s leading our strategic commitment to transparency and collaboration. Open source has been in our DNA since our earliest days as Square, but we’ve recently formalized this commitment by establishing a dedicated Open Source Program Office led by Manik. With decades of experience in the open source community (including work on JBoss and helping create gRPC), he brings both historical perspective and forward-thinking vision to this role. From codename goose, our trending AI framework, to infrastructure tools that power systems worldwide, our open source initiatives directly support our purpose of economic empowerment through transparency, accessibility, and trust. We’re proud to be the first company in North America to deploy the NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD with DGX GB200 systems for frontier AI research. This new infrastructure, deployed at an Equinix data center, will be used in the research and training of open source generative AI models, with the goal of solving real challenges for real people.
