Even in 2025, American design remains heavily influenced by Eurocentric ideas and colonial histories. How can we change that? The answer lies in decolonizing design. Decolonizing design means challenging the historical dominance of Western perspectives in design practices and elevating Indigenous architectural methodologies. By embracing these non-Western cultural frameworks, we can reshape design education and discourse, creating a more inclusive and equitable creative landscape. Here, METROPOLIS critically explores what decolonizing design entails, offering insights into how architects and designers can rethink design canons. Johnson Fain is proud to announce that Senior Designer and Project Architect Brendan Townes Bailey, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C, LFA will serve as the 2025 Chair of the AIA Los Angeles Committee on the Environment. Brendan’s leadership in sustainable design and advocacy builds on Johnson Fain’s legacy of environmental stewardship, a tradition exemplified by Principal James Donaldson, AIA, NCARB, who chaired COTE in 2020. As a contributing thought leader to the JF Sustainability and Resilience Lab and one of the firm’s multifamily housing experts, Brendan is committed to integrating innovative, high-performance strategies into the built environment. He has been instrumental on numerous Johnson Fain projects including Citrus Commons, a new mixed-use project occupying the historic Sunkist headquarters site set to open soon in Sherman Oaks, California. COTE’s mission is “to advance, disseminate, and advocate—to the profession, the building industry, the academy, and the public—design practices that integrate built and natural systems and enhance both design quality and environmental performance of the built environment.”?This mission mirrors Johnson Fain’s values and approach to design—championing solutions that not only meet current needs but are also forward-thinking, sustainable, and resilient. We look forward to supporting Brendan in this important role and to the continued impact of his work on both COTE’s initiatives and Johnson Fain’s sustainability efforts. We also invite you to join Brendan and Jed at this year’s 1.5°C Symposium on Climate Change, where industry leaders will convene to explore climate action, resilience, and the future of sustainable design.
