The Envision Unlimited Humanitarian Award shines a light on the dedication of individuals who make a significant difference in the lives of others. This year’s award is presented to Susan Turner in recognition of her extraordinary contributions to make the Envision Unlimited DreamHome a reality, ensuring that our members can age in place with dignity, accessibility and flexibility. For many years, we dreamed of having a fully-accessible, ADA-compliant group home for our older members, so they could continue leading lives that are full of possibilities. ? Susan, the senior technical architect at JLK Architects, volunteered to draft the schematic design to take it to the next stage. After she joined JLK Architects, the principals agreed to become the Architect of Record, pro bono. With that pivotal hurdle cleared, she recruited the consultant team and other members of the construction community pro bono to build the DreamHome. Their response was unprecedented and inspirational. Congratulations, Susan! Show your support for her at our 10th annual Bright Futures Ball on April 5. A soft pink arch, topped with terra cotta tiles, spans overtop a road in the heart of Chicago's Little Village, a largely Mexican American neighborhood. At its center is a bronze clock crafted by Mexico’s oldest clockmaking company, Relojes Centenario. ??Turning Back the Clock in Little Village!?? We're incredibly excited to share that the Little Village Arch Restoration Project is featured in the National Trust for Historic Preservation Winter 2025 issue of Preservation Magazine! Historic Preservation Architects and Architectural Historians at JLK worked with the Chicago Department of Transportation to restore the landmark street gateway. Built in 1991 and designed by Mexican-American artist and architect Adrián Lozano, the arch features two dome-capped stucco towers, decorative wrought-iron, orange mosaic tile set in a diamond pattern, clay tile roofing, and a mechanical face clock by Relojes Centenario - the oldest clockmaking company in Mexico. This state-of-the-art home in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood will enable seniors with disabilities to age in place and continue living a life of choice, independence and inclusion as their needs get more complex. ?? Meg Kindelin toured the Montreal Metro, Canada's busiest rapid transit system, during the The Association for Preservation Technology International (APT) conference last week. There are amazing lessons to apply to JLK Architects growing Transit station and systems portfolio! The Place-Saint-Henri Station - shown in these photos - was especially incredible.
