  • Today, American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association released treatment guideline changes for acute coronary syndrome and cardiogenic shock. The guideline update relies on the DanGer Shock RCT, the landmark trial on Impella that published in the New England Journal of Medicine, to come to its recommendation. It takes a team to save a life. We hosted a Heart Recovery Reunion to honor our physicians, caregivers, EMS and most importantly, our patient, Curtis, whose life was saved by this incredible team. Last summer, Curtis – a construction worker from Mission Viejo – was closing a job site when he began to experience light headedness and chest pain. Luckily, a good Samaritan happened to be nearby and called 911. Curtis was transported to our Heart and Vascular Center. Our expert team worked around the clock to save him. After multiple cardiac arrests, cardiologist Michael Chan, MD, identified a 100% occlusion of the right coronary artery and implanted the Impella CP heart pump. Curtis was intubated and sedated with the hope that his heart would rest and recover. After four days, Curtis' heart function improved and the Impella was removed. Curtis returned home to his family after a 13-day hospitalization with a new lease on life. He’s diligent about his new healthy diet and works hard in cardiac rehabilitation. Curtis and his family reunited with the team who saved his life – caregivers from Emergency, Heart & Vascular, Intensive Care, Med Tele, Nephrology and Lab, along with Dr. Chan and intensivists Dr. Peter Smethurst and Dr. Desmond Sjauwfoekloy, and our partners at Abiomed – whose innovative technology helps us save lives. #heartmonth ?? #SoStJoes

  • Impella Heart Pumps recover hearts and save lives because of the powerful intersection between our innovative engineering team and the exceptional physicians and health care providers who use them. So, on #EngineersWeek, it feels appropriate to highlight a wonderfully serendipitous example of that intersection. Dr. Mickey Ising is a cardiothoracic surgeon at St Elizabeth in Edgewood, KY. However, he didn’t always dream of being a surgeon. His first career was as an engineer at the Cardiovascular Innovation Institute in Louisville, KY, where he worked with Impella inventor Dr. Thorsten Siess. Dr. Ising credits his early work with Impella as the inspiration behind his decision to become a surgeon! Today he uses his combined experiences to treat patients with the same technology he once helped to develop. Happy #EngineersWeek to all of our amazing engineers, and thank you for dedication to putting #PatientsFirst. • Patients are the focus of everything we do, so it was amazing to have Impella CP? patient Jim Hart and his son Daniel at the center of today's inaugural National Heart Recovery Awareness Day event in collaboration with American Heart Association to bring the the first hands-only CPR teaching kiosk to Boston! Jim is a is a father of three, a college professor and pastor from New Jersey who, at the age of 43, began experiencing severe chest pain and collapsed at his home. His two oldest sons began giving Jim CPR compressions while his youngest son called 911. Once at the hospital, it was determined that Jim was in cardiogenic shock and his heart was failing. He was taken to the cardiac catheterization lab and an Impella CP? heart pump was implanted to allow Jim’s heart to rest before physicians placed stents. Thank you for sharing your story, Jim!

  • In recognition of the inaugural National Heart Recovery Awareness Day we are excited to collaborate with the American Heart Association to bring the first hands-only CPR teaching kiosk to Boston! The teaching tool was placed in the “Hall of Human Life” at the Museum of Science, Boston today. Located in more than 30 cities across the country, the hands-only CPR kiosks teach the two simple steps of hands-only CPR, which can be used in teens and adults who suddenly collapse from cardiac arrest and guides the user on how to effectively deliver CPR until help arrives.? #HeartRecoveryAwarenessDay

  • Today, Johnson & Johnson MedTech, the global leader in heart recovery, is proud to celebrate the inaugural National Heart Recovery Awareness Day! Recognized through a U.S. Congressional resolution, this designation will help increase awareness of heart health and how innovative medical technology helps patients return home to their families – with their native heart. In honor of National #HeartRecoveryAwarenessDay, there are more than 10 heart recovery reunions taking place this month, celebrating more than 50 patients across the country. Additionally, many patients will be sharing their stories of heart recovery at community and educational events, including the annual Utah Cardiac Recovery Symposium- #UCARS25!

  • When heart recovery patients share their incredible stories, we often hear that CPR played a critical role in keeping them alive long enough to receive treatment. That's why we're so excited to be partnering with the American Heart Association to kick off the first National Heart Recovery Awareness Day on February 20th by placing a CPR teaching kiosk in Boston's Museum of Science. By bringing this CPR teaching tool to Boston, we will help thousands of people learn how to administer CPR in an emergent situation. https://bit.ly/2qLXZys
