As the pediatric hospital of Johns Hopkins Medicine, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center brings collaborative multidisciplinary expertise to the treatment of every child who walks through our doors. Since 1912, the Children’s Center has offered one of the country’s most comprehensive pediatric medical programs. Johns Hopkins Children’s Center is consistently ranked among the top pediatric hospitals in the nation for all ten specialties, as surveyed by U.S. News & World Report. As Maryland’s largest children’s hospital and the only state-designated trauma service and burn unit for pediatric patients, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center has more than 92,000 patient visits and nearly 9,000 admissions each year. There’s growing concern about the spread of a highly contagious yet preventable disease, the measles. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization (WHO) say global cases jumped more than 20% last year. “[Unfortunately], the majority of the deaths that the WHO reported were among children less than five, which is really heartbreaking, because those are preventable deaths,” said Dr. Erica Prochaska, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics. Johns Hopkins helped shine a light on the Injury Free Coalition for Kids’ 5th Annual National Injury Prevention Day on Monday, November 18. In honor of National Injury Prevention Day, the Johns Hopkins Hospital dome, along with several other buildings around Baltimore, were lit up in green to help create awareness. National Injury Prevention Day is an effort to promote education and create awareness about the burden of injury and violence, particularly among children, and the need for change. Yesterday, the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center Wellness Committee hosted a gratitude event. Staff were encouraged to walk up and write down what they’re grateful for and how they practice gratitude. Each message was written on either a pumpkin or a paper leaf to decorate our new restorative space on the third floor. Thank you to everyone who stopped by and participated! We appreciate you ??

On November 18th, the Camden Yards Sports Complex is participating in “Shine a Green Light” in honor of Injury Free Coalition for Kids? National Injury Prevention Day that raises awareness of the efforts to stop injuries and violence -- the number one killer and cause of hospitalization of people from ages 1 to 44 years old. The Injury Free Coalition for Kids – Baltimore, includes the Johns Hopkins Children's Center and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Injury Research and Policy. Johns Hopkins Harriet Lane Clinic faculty members, staff members, and patients and their families gathered for the clinic’s third annual fall festival in October. More than 50 people, including many members of the clinic’s family advisory board, enjoyed food and entertainment during the event, which was held in Eager Park in East Baltimore and featured vendors that are Black-owned businesses in Baltimore. A DJ played music, a 360-photo booth was available, and activities for people of all ages included lawn games, bubble blowing, a 20-minute Zumba session, and chances to make sidewalk chalk art and a superhero cape and mask. The Johns Hopkins Advanced Practice Advisory Council provided information for adult caregivers about health conditions and health insurance, and LaToya Mobley, MSW, LCSW-C, from the Harriet Lane Clinic offered information on early childhood. The event organizers, including Nakiya Showell, medical director at the clinic, and Brandon Smith, associate medical director at the clinic, hope to hold similar community-focused events in the future to engage with staff members, patients and their families, and the East Baltimore community.
