On the basis of recent research, #maternal and child and other health programs of USAID and other US government agencies were saving an estimated 500 children and 500 women per day under the levels of foreign assistance provided prior to 2025. The studies compared lives saved in countries with USAID and other US government funding for maternal and child health programs as compared to the situation without funding using the synthetic control and other analytic methods. Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health faculty Bill Weiss , a professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who served as an advisor in the global health bureau... and his colleagues created a model to quantify?the effect of USAID funding from 2000 to 2016 on under-five childhood mortality?for low- and middle-income countries. The study was published in January 2022 in?Population Health Metrics. ?Weiss and his colleagues used a method called a “synthetic control” analysis to estimate childhood mortality retrospectively across a group of countries that did and didn’t receive significant amounts of USAID funding.? What happens when the data that guides humanitarian aid disappears? Humanitarian crises are volatile and ambiguous, and decision-making already takes place under time pressure with insufficient information. The loss of critical data streams would not only degrade the decision-making capability of the humanitarian sector; it would also lead to significant global risks – such as potential pandemics, rising insecurity, and emerging hunger crises – being overlooked or misunderstood. ?? Why is this happening? ?? What are the effects? A powerful piece from? The New Humanitarian?warns that the data streams critical to humanitarian response are close to collapse — and the consequences could be devastating for people in crisis. ?? Great discussions this week with colleagues across JHU and the humanitarian sector on “Bridging Climate, Health, Conflict, and Displacement Analytics for Preparedness and Response.” Big thanks to Paul Spiegel for bringing together such a diverse group of experts committed to reducing human suffering. The last few days meeting w such brilliant interdisciplinary colleagues was inspiring. The 2 day meeting at John’s Hopkins university in Wash was on climate change, health, conflict, forced displacement and migration. We all need to collaborate now more than ever as the termination of USAID and most of its funding is so negatively affecting so many of the data sources that we all rely upon to make decisions. While saddened and disheartened about the current situation, I come away inspired by the commitment and dedication of these scientists and humanitarians.

A Call to Action from CHH-Lancet Commissioners – Now Published in The Lancet The humanitarian system must transform—not be destroyed. CHH-Lancet Commission on Health, Conflict, and Forced Displacement envisions strategic transformation of the humanitarian system that increases efficiencies and shifts power, resources, and decision making closer to affected populations. The need for transformation of the humanitarian system is undeniable, but dismantling it without clear alternatives is not reform—it is a humanitarian disaster in the making. Such reckless actions will cost lives, erase decades of progress, and fracture global health security as the world faces unprecedented crises. The humanitarian system is not a private company that can undergo a hostile takeover to make it more profitable. ?? Our commissioners’ joint call is now published in The Lancet. ???The time for decisive, principled action is NOW. https://lnkd.in/dY6-XqxD The Lancet Group CHH-Lancet Commission on Health, Conflict, and Forced Displacement Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health

Check out Kathryn Falb and co-authors' paper on Violence against women and girls (VAWG), which is a major global issue with severe health, economic, and human rights consequences.?
New paper alert!?Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a major global issue with severe health, economic, and human rights consequences. Despite the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5.2 calling for its elimination, progress remains slow due to insufficient data and fragmented research efforts. To overcome these challenges, Kathryn Falb and coauthors recommend a transdisciplinary approach and urge researchers, institutions, and funders to collaborate and accelerate prevention efforts for lasting change. #EndVAWG #SDG5. A Case Report published in the BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth states that in the case of #Ebola, #HIV, and #Malaria co-infection, maternal and fetal survival remains possible even in the context of resources limited-setting.?This case raises questions about the effects of the interactions of these co-infections and/or their antibodies and treatment during immune adaptation of the gravid organism.
