One of the unique features of Michigan Central Station is the massive number of windows that fill the 500,000-square-foot station with natural light. The most stunning are the three 40-foot-tall monumental windows of the building’s Waiting Room. Following decades of no maintenance, extensive water infiltration, looting and vandalism, only the mild steel frames and gray iron castings of much of the windows survived in this space. Almost all the glazing was smashed or missing, the operating mechanisms were damaged, and much of the rosettes and filigree that made up the decorative border of the Waiting Room windows were missing or destroyed. To replicate the decorative border, the team needed detailed images of the original elements. Grainy images from original construction didn’t offer the detail needed. As luck may have it, a project team member had spotted one of the building’s original rosettes at a local antique store. After confirming it was, indeed, from the station, the team was able to recreate these elements through 3D printing. As for the glass, the monumental windows were restored in place while the smaller windows were removed and shipped to a facility in Alabama for repair and restoration. With temporary protection to keep water out, iron was removed and restored, and over 102,000 square feet of new glass windows were installed or repaired.
