To kick off Black History Month, I’m proud to share the incredible journey of Patrice Okotie, Practice Manager - Surgical Services, whose leadership, mentorship, and dedication inspire us all at John Muir Health.
Born and raised in San Diego, Patrice moved to the Bay Area in 2016 with her family, seeking a fresh start. She quickly fell in love with the region’s diversity and vibrant culture. Even before moving, Patrice had her sights set on John Muir Health, drawn by its stellar reputation. She joined in 2020, took a two-year hiatus, and returned in 2024, thriving in her current role.
A highlight of Patrice’s career is the impact she’s had mentoring aspiring Black healthcare professionals as a medical assistant instructor. She taught not just technical skills but also resilience and compassion, leaving a lasting impact on her students, many of whom still express their gratitude.
Patrice credits her grandmother—a hospital aide who took pride in her work—for inspiring her to pursue a career in healthcare. She also draws strength from Harriet Tubman’s words: “Every great dream begins with a dreamer.”
Today, as a leader at John Muir Health, Patrice strives to foster a culture of respect, inclusion, and open dialogue. She believes diversity is not just about representation but about creating spaces where every voice is valued and heard. “JMH does a great job demonstrating a strong commitment to representing a wide range of cultures and backgrounds,” she notes. Patrice continues to advocate for equity and inclusion while setting an example for the next generation of Black women in healthcare.
Thank you, Patrice, for your dedication and impact on our community!
