?? The Periscope Effect: Avoiding Target Fixation as an Inventor ?? A message from Michigan Inventors Coalition Board Member, Kevin Moran Every inventor has had that moment—the gut punch when someone points out an obvious flaw in your product that you completely overlooked. It’s frustrating. It’s humbling. And it’s inevitable. I call this The Inventor’s Periscope. You’re so locked in on your vision—your market, your customer, your perfect launch plan—that you miss the simple things right in front of you. I learned this lesson the hard way with my own product, OilUdder. After spending $5,000 on a promo video, I bravely (or foolishly) posted it on Reddit. Within minutes, the internet tore it apart: ?? “Cool idea, but where’s the drain?” ?? “Needs a valve—why isn’t there one?” ?? “Would be better if you could attach a tube.” At first, I resisted. My product didn’t need a drain! Users could cut the bottom or just dump it out. But then I had to face the uncomfortable truth—they were right. I had ignored similar feedback before, convinced my idea was airtight. That mistake cost me six months of slow sales, another $5,000 in revisions, and a complete overhaul of my marketing. So, to all the inventors out there: What feedback are you ignoring? ? Write it down. ? Check your ego at the door. ? Ask yourself, “What don’t I want to be true, but might be?” Fixing the issue now will save you time, money, and headaches later. I’ve yet to meet a successful inventor who hasn’t faced and overcome the Periscope Effect. Keep pushing. Keep innovating.
