We have an exciting new week of #NATop50 highlights, starting with Karthik Avadhanula! Karthik is the Senior Director of Advanced Manufacturing at JobsOhio. He has an incredible story of growth and leadership. Read on to learn more about Karthik! Looking back at your career so far, what makes you most proud or fulfilled? When I started in 2014, I didn’t see many first-generation immigrants contributing to or thriving in the economic development industry. I’m proud to have chosen this path and to have shown that it’s a viable and successful career option for motivated individuals who want to contribute to the place they “choose” to call home. I’m fortunate to be part of JobsOhio, which has given me the opportunity to contribute to my community. I hope my story will inspire more first-generation immigrants to pursue careers in economic development. How has economic development changed since you entered the field? I believe economic development, like many industries, is markedly different in the pre- and post-COVID world. For example: 1. Frequency of mega projects (500+ jobs): Pre-COVID, the industry in North America saw just a handful of these projects. Post-COVID, driven by federal stimulus in many countries, the number of mega deals has multiplied exponentially. 2. Visibility among general population has dramatically improved post-Covid. A lot of local and national news organizations have started following the announcements and information coming out of EDOs. 3. Geo-politics and macro trends playing bigger role in deals. Previously, it was mostly location economics that drove the decision making on a deal. Now it is the political (local to national) willingness and macro trends generated by federal policies driving majority of the conversation. What is your favorite characteristic of your community or region? Why? I grew up in a tropical country with very hot weather and moved to Ohio when I was 26. There are two things I personally love about Ohio: 1. We get to experience all four seasons, and there’s no shortage of things to do in each. 2. Ohio and the Upper Midwest are considered some of the safest regions (weather-wise) on the planet, which makes me so happy to be raising a family in this blessed place. ? What led you to economic development? What’s kept you here? I’m often told I have a very curious mind, and I get bored if I’m not learning something new regularly. Coming from a background in manufacturing and strategy consulting, I was seeking fast-paced, challenging, and impactful work that would shape the trajectory of my career. As an MBA intern at JobsOhio in 2012, I saw the opportunity to be in an impactful yet challenging role in economic development, where we interact with and learn about new businesses and business models every day.
