When I was graduating during Global Financial Crisis, one of the professors in charge said in his speech, "For the first 1-2 years, put your head down and do good work. Then balance it with being strategically visible and hopefully, you would never need to look for a job again" How I wish we had learned the "Being strategically visible" part when starting out! It was through life experiences that the lesson became loud and clear! Before that: - Company social events (I don't like drinking, what's the point) - Speaking up in meetings (There are senior people who would have thought this, what's the point) - Networking with senior management (I am doing great work for them to notice me, what's the point) The point was "Out of sight, out of mind" - When better opportunities came, they were discussed during these social events - When high-impact projects were being distributed, people who spoke up in meetings got tapped - When promotions were being considered, team members who were known to senior management got a clear advantage! Doing good work wasn't enough! And I am so glad that I learnt this lesson within the first couple of years of working. It made all the difference! Driving career growth is not solely dependent on your performance. To me, there are 3 skills that drive career growth: - Continuous learning - Strategic Visibility - Networking And next Thursday, I will be doing a lunch and learn session for the public on "Driving career growth" where we will break down everything you need to take your career forward.
