Earlier this month, we shared space with artists from the 2022 and 2023 cohorts of Joan Mitchell Fellows for a three-day convening at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans (June 6-9, 2024). Centering conversations about making and living with intention, the convening was designed to nurture relationships among the Fellows; to introduce skills and frameworks for balancing their professional, personal and creative lives; and to get them thinking about what they most need, want, and have to give to each other and their communities. The Joan Mitchell Foundation warmly welcomes Brooklyn-based artist Chitra Ganesh to our Board of Directors. Ganesh brings to the Foundation more than two decades of experience as a visual artist, coupled with extensive engagement with artist-centered organizations rooted in the queer and South Asian communities. “We are excited to have Chitra’s voice at the table, as a practicing artist, former Foundation grant recipient, and long-time activist and organizer,” said Christa Blatchford, Executive Director of the Joan Mitchell Foundation. “Chitra has been a member of the Joan Mitchell Foundation community since 2010, when she was awarded a Painters & Sculptors Grant. Her career and the recognition of the importance of her work have only grown since that time—as has her commitment to working in service of other artists. We look forward to deepening our engagement with Chitra over the coming years as a board member.” “I am delighted to have the opportunity to contribute to the Joan Mitchell Foundation—an artist-centered initiative with a long history of substantially supporting artists in varying stages of their careers, while transforming as an organization to meet the changing landscape and needs of artists,” said Chitra Ganesh. “After receiving a grant from the Foundation as a younger artist, I had the first-hand experience of how valuable the Foundation’s unrestricted support was. I admire the Foundation’s commitment to inviting artists to play a vital role in shaping the decision-making, vision, and future of the Foundation. As growing wealth stratification and market domination exert an undue influence upon the material lives and career trajectories of artists, I see the Joan Mitchell Foundation as a rare gem in sustaining and centering artists.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gzVhQBsM

The questions in our free Estate Planning worksheet, developed with the Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston, encourage artists to consider their legacy in a larger context and to prepare for conversations with an estate planning attorney. Some of the big-picture questions include: - How do you want to be remembered?? - How do you want your work to be remembered?? - Do you want to support any particular group, location, or charity?? - Who could be the steward for your legacy? https://lnkd.in/gvfGCv3C

“Throughout your art practice, in addition to your dealings with clients, agents, and fellow artists, you will no doubt engage a number of professionals who will provide services to you: accountants, vendors, suppliers, contractors… And as with any business transaction, it is in everyone’s best interest to document these relationships. You will typically do so by a contract or agreement.” As experienced attorneys and leading educators on estate and legacy planning for artists, James F. Grace and Luke Blackadar of Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston contributed an essay to the Foundation's resource guide, Career Documentation for the Visual Artist," that addresses some common legal issues that arise when artists enter into various types of contracts. “Imagine if you were to approach the career documentation process as if you’d been invited to give an in-depth interview chronicling your life, career, and artistic legacy. This is an opportunity to tell your story in your own words and to create, add to, or correct the historical record regarding your work. The task may seem daunting, but it can be done—and enjoyed—if you take the process one step at a time.” In our recent publication,?Career Documentation for Visual Artists, Voices in Contemporary Art (VoCA) Program Director Margaret Graham outlines an approach to career mapping as a means of understanding an artist’s life, work, and career—and as a tool to help you plan your own artistic legacy. https://lnkd.in/eADksG28

“A preservation plan provides structure, accountability, and a shareable guide for the future care and maintenance of your body of artwork. By documenting the current condition and future care of your oeuvre, you are creating an organized, replicable information resource." LaStarsha McGarity, Director and Conservator of the Legacy Museum at Tuskegee University, contributed a chapter on preservation planning for the Foundation’s recent publication, "Career Documentation for the Visual Artist: A Legacy Planning Workbook & Resource Guide."
