Dear friends and colleagues. Our sector is facing difficult times, and unfortunately, many talented, dedicated, humanitarian and mine action colleagues have found themselves in job insecurity—or worse, without a position. At the UNOPS Peace and Security Cluster, we have reopened applications for our Programme Officer pool—a key role often described as the "glue" of the team. Programme Officers bring together multiple departments, ensuring effective coordination, planning, and management of projects that change lives. While this pool doesn’t guarantee immediate deployment, it is the primary mechanism through which we fill upcoming vacancies—and we have multiple openings right now across different project units. Those accepted into the pool will be automatically shortlisted for these opportunities. ?? Apply by March 2: https://lnkd.in/gxQ7Cedd? ?? Please share with your network—you never know who might need this opportunity. My thoughts are with all that are struggling with recent developments- please reach out if you'd like to discuss. I am particularly keen to receive applicants with experience in mine action, in humanitarian contexts, especially women. #MineAction #JobOpportunity #HumanitarianWork #ProgrammeManagement #Hiring #UNOPS

In reponse to a great question from our friends at Center for International Stabilization and Recovery: "Love the video! The water applied to the saw blade, is that to prevent sparks during cutting? We'd love to feature an article on the EHP in The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction (bit.ly/jcwd)." From Len Austin, Golden West Humanitarian Foundation Cambodia Country Manager and Director of our Explosive Harvesting Program: "It's a mixture of water and standard metal cutting fluid. For cutting munitions, it is required to have 2 ports pushing out the cutting fluid onto the cutting blade and the other to flush the blade after the cut.? ? Our system recycles the cutting fluid using a straining system built into the cutting system. The cutting mixture removes 2 out of the 3 requirements to cause a high order detonation (the 3 being heat, shock, and friction) and we take away the heat and friction.? ? These requirements are based on the DOE M 440.1.1A DOE Explosives Safety Manual and the DoD 4145.26-M DOD Contractor's Safety Manual for Ammunition and Explosives."
Golden West Humanitarian Foundation's #Explosive Harvesting Program (EHP) is a groundbreaking initiative supported by the U.S. Department of State Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement (PM/WRA) and the #Humanitarian #Demining Research and Development Program (HDR&D). This short video showcases the entire process; from identifying recovered ordnance to safely removing and processing explosives into high-quality shaped charges used in landmine disposal. Over the years, EHP has produced and supplied more than 680,000 charges to ????????????????????????????????? - CMAC (Cambodian Mine Action Centre), supporting nationwide efforts to eliminate #landmines and unexploded ordnance. This program not only addresses the legacy of war but also contributes to a safer, mine-free #Cambodia. #landminefree #humanitarianaid #RoyalCambodianArmedForces https://lnkd.in/gpga3uuP

Mine action transforms land, delivering humanitarian and developmental benefits, but it can also ignite disputes over its ownership and use. How can we mitigate land disputes? In 2021, the Mine Action Programme of Afghanistan documented tribal clashes, land-grabbing, and government-community tensions. Though rare, such disputes underscore the need for conflict-sensitive approaches and coordination between mine action and partners in the Housing, Land and Property?space. ?? Nick Ross explains how integrating land rights into mine action can empower communities in a way that minimizes social tension. #LandRights #MineAction #ConflictResolution #JCWD ????

Huge thank you to Zina Barjas and Syamed Agly from The American University of Kurdistan (AUK) for visiting us last week. Over the course of five days, we had the privilege of introducing Zina and Syamed to life here at James Madison University, where they collaborated with various departments around campus, sharing knowledge and insights related to their respective roles. We’re excited to continue our partnership with AUK and look forward to building meaningful connections between our two institutions. #AUK ?? #JMU ?? #HigherEducation

Explosive contamination affects four of Armenia’s regions, with over 10 sq km of confirmed and 31 sq km of suspected hazardous areas. Armenia’s Center for Humanitarian Demining and Expertise (CHDE) is collaborating with UN agencies to study the social, economic, behavioral, and environmental impacts these weapons have on the 800+ registered landmine survivors in country. CHDE’s director, Vaghinak Sargsyan, shares how their Greening Mine Action initiative is creating sustainable benefits for Armenian civilians. ?? bit.ly/jcwd283-11 #Armenia #MineAction #sustainable ?? courtesy of CHDE.
