For the first time in Joseph & Mary’s Home history, we are receiving funding through the Ohio State Capital Budget that was signed by Governor DeWine in June. The $250,000 in funds will support the renovation of the north space at 2302 Community College Avenue to relocate Joseph’s Home for men into a modern and 100% handicapped accessible facility. Art therapy is helping Mary's Home resident Janet heal her body and mind after spending several years in and out of shelters. She’s finally in an environment where she is medically healing and now able to plan for her future. In an interview, she said, "It’s wonderful to have a resident room big enough to store my painting supplies. I am always in the art therapy room doodling or seeing how watercolor paint lays on a different type of paper. It helps me relax and de-stress and, at the same time, challenges me to learn more." Signal Cleveland published an article today about the work we do in helping people experiencing homelessness who need a space and time to recover from medical treatment, and how the population we serve is easy to overlook. “We see people without a lot of choices. We have great news to share. In July, we're beginning construction to renovate and relocate our facility for men! The new Joseph's Home will be located just next door, in the same building as Mary's Home. It will be modernized and 100% handicapped accessible. This need is greater than ever to provide an updated medical respite care facility: As our population ages the number of unhoused seniors is projected to triple by 2030. To support this transformational project, “A New Home for Healing” Campaign has a goal of raising $2.5 million. To date, we've raised a total of $1.95 million and we’re excited to announce a matching gift of $150,000 from the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine to inspire community support. Staff Spotlight: Learn how Stanley Foster, peer recovery supporter, uses his experience with recovery to help others on their recovery journeys at Joseph & Mary’s Home. "It’s good to talk to the clients and be an example that you can get better. It’s ironic that the worst things that happened in my life, that I have been the most ashamed of, are the things that I use to talk about and motivate other people. When I talk about substance abuse and losing my job and the experience of finding a place to sleep for a night, clients listen because they trust me." 8th grade student scholars from William Rainey Harper School in Cleveland's Old Brooklyn neighborhood selected Joseph & Mary’s Home for their Community Project Action. After touring our facilities to learn more, they organized a hygiene drive last week. The entire prek-8 community (and staff!) participated. We are so grateful for their leadership and thank the entire William Rainey Harper, CMSD community for their thoughtful donations to the men and women healing at Joseph & Mary’s Home.
