Enjoyed returning to Nashville earlier this month to speak at a professional development event for Tennessee National Guard officers – especially as a former Tennessee resident.?The main subjects were how status and power can impact our thinking and how to minimize bias in decision making. ? I’d heard a lot about West Point during 21 years in the military, so it was an honor to officially visit its Simon Center for the Professional Military Ethic in January.?The visit included sitting in on its capstone course and meeting with center faculty as we continue to build new training for the National Guard. It was genuinely inspiring to meet cadets who devote their college years to rigorous training and learn from the staff who oversee and continually improve that training.? Upholding ethics has never been more urgent.?There is *always* an excuse to take shortcuts or bully those who can’t fight back.?But that route leads to ruin, and we must always maintain the high standards that define the U.S. military.
