JK Community Farm

On Thursday, we hosted our annual Intern Day event at the farm. Intern day is one of our favorite days of the season, interns from our partnership companies join us for a morning of volunteering and learn about their companies commitment to giving back while networking with interns from companies with similar CSR values. This year we were grateful to host over 80 interns who harvested 4319.7 lbs (about 3,455 meals) and transplanted over 1,000 watermelon seedlings. As always we were happy to serve them a delicious lunch from @smokinwillybbq following their event! It is never lost on us how fortunate we are for our volunteer community and our corporate partners, but seeing just how much 80 20-somethings can accomplish in the field in 3 hours is a great reminder! Studies show that not only does corporate social responsibility encourage a higher caliber of job applicant, but it can also encourage employees to become more engaged and invested in their work. CSR can improve employee retention rates, boost morale, build loyalty and increase motivation. An engaged, happy employee who takes pride in their work is more likely to be a highly productive employee.

We are grateful for another wonderful planting season at the JK Community Farm. Our annual Plant-a-Thon event is our most important weekend of the season. During this weekend we transplant over 50,000 seedlings from our greenhouse into our fields during two full days of planting with our incredible community. Planting these seedlings during our Plant-a-Thon allows us to provide our food pantry partners with healthy produce throughout the season. For the first season in 6 years, it poured most of the day Saturday. Going into the weekend, we prepared for most people not to show up and tried to figure out when we will get our plants in the ground. We should have had more confidence in our volunteer community, because you all are truly amazing. Even from our youngest volunteers, there was no complaining about the rain and the mud. Our teams worked incredibly hard to make sure that everything we had planned for our Plant-a-Thon was planted. We couldn’t be more impressed by the hard work, attitudes, and compassion for the families we serve. We will be transplanting over 50,000 seedlings from our greenhouse into our fields which will grow into over 130,000 healthy meals for food pantries throughout our region.
