In the digital age, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to information literacy, especially amongst Gen Z. Earlier this year, Jigsaw shared a new in-depth ethnographic study on how Gen Z engages with online information. Turns out that, unlike previous generations, young people trust their favorite influencers and communities to interpret the news for them. These findings highlight the changing landscape of information sharing, where traditional sources are less relevant, and personal connections hold the most sway. We continue to deepen our understanding of these shifts and promote a more informed digital dialogue. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dFiC4y2Z

This week, Google stores in New York City and Mountain View held interactive events for consumers to learn about tools they can use to protect their sign-ins and strengthen their cyber smarts. Attendees heard from speakers across Google, including Grace Hoyt, Habeeb Salau, Dan Givol, and Christiaan Brand, and tested their scam spotting skills with Jigsaw’s Phishing Quiz. Over 3 billion phishing emails are sent every day. Before Cybersecurity Awareness Month comes to a close, share the Phishing Quiz with your friends and family to help keep them safe from online attacks: https://lnkd.in/ebNYDk8

Distributed denial-of-services (DDoS) attacks are one of the largest threats to websites. DDoS allows attackers to cheaply and anonymously flood servers with overwhelming amounts of traffic, disrupting operations without needing any direct access. These attacks are particularly harmful to organizations supporting vulnerable communities. Project Shield, a free service developed by Google Cloud and Jigsaw, offers critical protection against DDoS attacks for news, human rights, and elections-related websites. Today, we’re excited to announce that Project Shield is expanding its protection to organizations advocating for marginalized communities, and non-profits focused on the arts & sciences. Powered by Google Cloud’s robust infrastructure–including Cloud Load Balancing, the Global Front End, Cloud CDN, and Cloud Armor–Project Shield delivers the same high level of security that safeguards Google’s own core services like Search and Gmail.? In 2018, Jigsaw created a quiz to help you spot phishing attacks online. But scams are on the rise, and the use of genAI tools by bad actors is making it easier than ever for fraudsters to trick people with phony emails, texts and phone calls. This year, we’re kicking off Cybersecurity Awareness Month with an updated version of our Phishing Quiz, complete with new examples of the types of attacks you might see today. Put your scam spotting skills to the test and see if you can tell what’s real and fake: https://lnkd.in/eQVx_j7Q

Today wrapped up the last day of TrustCon, a convening of great trust and safety minds, and day 3 of the conference was a busy day! Using Altitude as a case study, researchers from Google and Jigsaw shared insights from interviews with platform moderators and civil society that informed the development of Altitude. And Tech Against Terrorism Director Adam Hadley discussed moderating “borderline” terrorist content in the age of AI. Platforms can join the Tech Against Terrorism network to receive free, individualized Altitude onboarding support including guided installation, testing, and feedback, as well as access to a suite of specialist services for members. As Tech Against Terrorism continues this important work, we’re excited to see how users take Altitude and apply it to their varying moderation needs on their own platforms. https://lnkd.in/eU3RPUnc

Terrorist and violent extremist groups are increasingly targeting smaller platforms to spread ideologically aligned content. Identifying and removing this content has become a major challenge for smaller, niche services. Enter Altitude: an open-source tool developed by Jigsaw and Tech Against Terrorism in partnership with The Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT), empowering platforms with advanced moderation capabilities. Altitude, the only free, open-source, self-hosted tool to give online platforms a single elevated view of potential terrorist and violent extremist content (TVEC), helps moderators make informed and timely content moderation decisions on their sites. We are thrilled to support Tech Against Terrorism as it takes on the maintenance and expansion of Altitude! We’ll be diving into the development of Altitude at this year’s TrustCon – check back for updates! https://lnkd.in/e_krQk8j

When it comes to how Gen Z digests and addresses the validity of information, Jigsaw’s recent research found that generally, they look to each other. The insights from our recent Gen Z ethnographic study, featured in a new piece from Business Insider, are informing our work as we try to meet Gen Z where they are – in the comment sections! Our findings are just one piece of a larger effort to support better, more informed dialogue online along with the addition of bridging attributes to our Perspective API tool earlier this year. Since 2017, Jigsaw's Perspective API has helped over 10,000 organizations enable more engaging discussions online, supporting diverse voices in 18 languages and ranging from small publishers to large social media platforms. Earlier this year, Jigsaw announced the addition of bridging attributes to Perspective, attributes that recognize speech qualities like reasoning and personal stories to keep discussions engaging and productive. This marked the first step in our ongoing mission to enhance deliberative technologies and promote a healthier dialogue online, and we’re eager to partner with the many dedicated organizations already working toward this vision. That’s why we’re excited about some new initiatives that we’re driving in the next few months: - Position Paper: A comprehensive agenda for the field of deliberative technologies, with plans for future research and technical development alongside 20 co-authors in civil society, the private sector, governments, and academia. - Technical Research: A partnership with Google DeepMind to explore how LLMs might help make sense of large-scale conversations by identifying areas of emerging consensus or divergence. - Catalytic Funding: A partnership with Google.org for the Google.org Impact Challenge: Strengthening Democracy in Europe, a €15M open call to fund European nonprofits, civic entities, academic institutions, and social enterprises to help scale initiatives promoting democratic resilience in the region.
