On November 14, 2024, we were incredibly proud to see Drs. Novalene Goklish and Francene Larzelere (White Mountain Apache Tribe), both Assistant Scientists at the Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health, serve as keynote speakers at the White Mountain Apache Tribe’s Annual Women’s Health and Wellness Conference in Pinetop, Arizona. As they shared the powerful stories of their educational journeys, we were reminded of how their growth has paralleled the Center’s journey. They are the epitome of advancing health leadership and their dedication and leadership continue to inspire us all. It is our honor to work with them both. #NativesDoingTheirPart #NativeAmericanHealth #IndigenousHealth #NativeAmerican #AmericanIndian #AlaskanNative #HealthyTribes #IndigenousPeople #NativeHealth #TribalHealth

关于我们
We work in partnership with communities to advance Indigenous well-being and health leadership to the highest level. We are an independent center within the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health with satellite offices on tribal lands of White Mountain Apache, Navajo Nation, Great Lakes and Montana, where our Native American workforce serves their own communities. With over 35 years of collaboration with Southwestern tribes, our programs now reach more than 150 tribal communities in 23 states. These partnerships have achieved landmark public health breakthroughs credited with saving over 60 million children’s lives worldwide.

#Indigenous women are more likely to experience complications from pregnancy and childbirth than non-Indigenous women, leading to higher rates of anxiety and depression. Dr. Jennifer Richards, assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health, and Dr. Jennifer Crawford, clinical psychologist and assistant professor at the The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center join American Hospital Association's podcast to discuss the perspectives needed to provide maternal care for Indigenous women, and the importance of awareness of their cultural and spiritual practices. Indigenous doulas used to be the norm. They were entrusted by the community and supported tribal women from pregnancy through birth and beyond. However, Federal assimilation policies beginning in the 19th century smothered the Indigenous doula’s role alongside Native languages, religions, and cultures. According to Dr. Jennifer Richards, (Diné/Lakota/Taos Pueblo) assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health, “there is a long history of historical trauma as it relates to reproductive health care. Many of our women are only one or two generations removed from forced sterilization within the federal health care system.” Grassroots programs such as the Hummingbird Indigenous Family Services and the Center for Indigenous Health’s @Family Spirit Home Visiting Program are aimed at improving Indigenous women’s health through education and empowerment. Supporting Indigenous women during pregnancy through their child’s early years helps women make the best decisions about their health and, ultimately, the health of their entire family. Consistent access to safe, affordable drinking water continues to be a significant challenge for many Diné families. Findings from the Diné Household Water Survey reveal that the majority of families in the Fort Defiance Agency primarily rely on bottled water for drinking. This underscores the urgent need for comprehensive data to inform sustainable water solutions. Read more about the realities families face at https://lnkd.in/eZeRQuTQ, and explore additional study findings at https://lnkd.in/eBugtax7. #NativesDoingTheirPart #NativeAmericanHealth #IndigenousHealth #NativeAmerican #AmericanIndian #AlaskanNative #HealthyTribes #IndigenousPeople #NativeHealth #TribalHealth?
