Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Former Director of CMS Innovation Center Liz F., PhD, JD, was appointed to the full-time faculty in HPM as a Distinguished Scholar on Thursday, February 27th. Dr.?Fowler?joins David C. Chin, MD, MBA; Jeffrey?P.?Michael,?EdD; and Kaytura Felix, MD, as the esteemed HPM faculty who hold the title of “Distinguished Scholar” in recognition of their leadership in their respective fields. Dr.?Fowler?is a public health practitioner with extensive expertise in federal health policy. Most recently she served as the Deputy Administrator and Director of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMS Innovation Center), a position that she began in 2021 and held through the end of the Biden Administration. In this role, she led the development of new payment and care delivery models in Medicare and Medicaid designed to promote value-based care on a national scale. ? Dr.?Fowler?received her BA from the University of Pennsylvania, a PhD from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (’96) and a law degree from the University of Minnesota.?As an alumna of HPM, Dr.?Fowler?is very familiar with the HPM community. She will work closely with Dr. Jerry Anderson’s team on drug pricing and affordability and is eager to engage with students and faculty on the important work happening across the department.

Both winning teams received plaques and cash prizes, awarded by esteemed health system leaders who judged the competition. The first event in CMAP's three-part event series took place at the Hopkins Bloomberg Center in Washington D.C. on February 27th. The event, A Mental Health in All Policies Agenda for the New Administration, brought together a panel of leaders from government, foundations, and academia to discuss economic empowerment as a pillar of mental health in all policies agenda that can guide the next administration. Speakers discussed a number of topics, including the evidence around upstream factors that shape mental health, what role individuals play in shaping mental health outcomes, the role structural racism has played in mental illness and addiction crises, and what bipartisan approaches to addressing these issues could look like. HPM Alum Sarena Ho, MSPH '22, shares her journey from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health graduate student to Model Lead for the?Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience?(GUIDE) model at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Innovation Center (CMMI). At CMMI, she champions better care for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. A?new study aims to address inequities in digital technology access by guiding the intentional integration of equity throughout the lifecycle of digital health care solutions. The Digital Health Care Equity Framework (DHEF), developed through a collaborative process involving a diverse panel of experts and supported by the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, marks a pivotal step toward ensuring that digital health tools benefit all communities equitably. February 15th marks the third anniversary of Keshia Pollack Porter's tenure as chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Today she is using her monthly column to reflect on her time as the first Black chair in the Bloomberg School’s 100 plus year history and what inspires her to keep going in the face of adversity. "There are countless Black and African American leaders across science, the arts, politics, education and other sectors whose contributions and excellence have advanced racial equity and justice. They endured and overcame challenges, and through their leadership blessed so many other future leaders... On December 3, 2024, the Bloomberg American Health Initiative held its annual summit with the theme "Advancing Public Health in Uncertain Political Times." "The problem we are trying to solve is that every single day, decisions are made in sectors outside of health, such as transportation, energy, housing, and health impacts aren't always at the forefront. So my colleague Stefanie Carignan and I and some other colleagues created a tool a few years ago called a Legislative Health Note to focus on proposed bills...
