JGMA's finalist proposal for the City of Chicago's Bronzeville Development Competition presents a visionary opportunity to rekindle the soul of Bronzeville by seamlessly blending musical heritage, history, and modern urban living. "Bronzeville Evolve" seeks to breathe new life into this historically significant area, creating a vibrant gateway that reestablishes vital connections to the lakefront, surrounding neighborhoods, and the greater Chicagoland area. This multi-family residential and mixed-use development, featuring an outdoor museum, honors the scale and rhythms of the existing neighborhood, ensuring it stays true to Bronzeville’s cultural identity. The warm, earthy tones of the facades are inspired by the three colors that make up bronze—red, yellow, and blue—symbolizing the rich diversity of the people and personalities that shape the community. The design acknowledges the strength and beauty of the community, celebrating its shared heritage while fostering deeper connections that transcend surface differences. "Bronzeville Evolve" redefines perceptions and invites all to see the neighborhood for what it truly is—a place of pride, resilience, and an indomitable spirit. This project stands as a catalyst for revival, where diversity is embraced and celebrated, and where Bronzeville’s rich legacy is honored as the foundation for a bright, inclusive future. Today's JGMA’s project from the 2015 archive is the vision to transform the former Chicago Public Schools Paderewski Elementary School into a beacon of community and creativity for Little Village. Rooted in our belief that every community deserves spaces that uplift, inspire, and welcome, this proposal reimagines the old school as a vibrant hub where arts and education are catalysts for connection and growth. By opening up an outdated gymnasium and theater into a community art gallery and event space, we envisioned a place where high school students seeking support, adults, artists, musicians, and art lovers could gather, share their voices and create lasting impact together. Today's project from the JGMA archive is Our Lady of Guadalupe Church (2015)! As the third largest Archdiocese in the United States, Chicago is home to a profound and deeply rooted tradition of honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe. Each year, thousands of pilgrims gather to celebrate her, creating one of the largest observances in the country. Responding to the need for a more formal, sacred space in Chicagoland, the parish aimed to transform an old gymnasium into a sanctuary that would honor the Virgin of Guadalupe's spirit at the very site where the pilgrimage takes place annually. Our team’s design embraced this vision, integrating bold geometry and mirrored finishes that would echo the statue of Guadalupe located within its garden. The space fostered a deepened connection for all who journey here, offering a place to pause, reflect, and find comfort. #Architecture #Design #LatinxArchitect #Chicago
