Last night, Boston College history professor Heather Cox Richardson joined GBH Boston Public Radio co-host Margery Eagan and author Eileen McNamara to discuss the 2024 Election. In it, Richardson said the Republican Party has used the same strategy for almost 40 years: “By 1986, there was a landslide of Democrats into House and the Senate, and they recognized to maintain the kind of power they wanted to, they were going to have to continue to divide the American people, to put in voter suppression laws which they began in 1986, to stack the courts which they began in 1986, and to really hammer on the idea that there were good Americans who stood against those people. And those people were Black, Brown, by 1970 under Nixon, they had also become women. And those were people who wanted a hand out from the federal government that were taking tax dollars from hard working White people.
