Founder and CEO at JetLogiq Solutions

As the founder of an early-stage software company, I initially didn't grasp the distinction between bootstrapping and raising venture capital. Over the years, as I've built my company, I've come to understand the significant differences between these two funding approaches. Based on one's long-term goals, I would recommend different strategies. Bootstrapping is suitable for founders who wish to maintain more control over their company's revenue, cap table, and growth trajectory. This approach is not necessarily aimed at achieving a thousandfold return on capital. It's more about steady growth and control, allowing you to steer your company according to your vision without the pressure to scale at an explosive rate. On the other hand, if you opt for fundraising through venture capital or similar large funding rounds, your goal should typically be to build a company that can achieve a very large exit. This is because the math of the venture capital industry demands significant returns. Venture capitalists and their investors (limited partners) expect outsized returns on their investments. Thus, while you might have a profitable company that's doing well financially, it won't be considered a success in the venture capital context unless it can potentially deliver a billion-dollar exit. So, when you're deciding how to build and finance your software company, it's crucial to keep the end goal in mind. Whether you choose to bootstrap or raise capital through external investors should align with your vision for the company's future and the scale of success you aim to achieve.
