Universities can pay more than a quarter of a million dollars per year for access to a citation index. Shocking, right? In 2024 Curtis Brundy and Joel B. Thornton, CPA published a dataset (https://lnkd.in/etENdW8w) highlighting how much large universities pay for subscriptions to Scopus and Web of Science. The amounts shocked me given that few PhD students and researchers I know ever use such tools. Indeed, I started a competitor to the two main indices and I think I only used them once or twice in my PhD! The other reason this is shocking is that as of June 3rd 2022 all references in CrossRef are now open from the initiative for open citations (https://i4oc.org/). From that have emerged what Aaron Tay refers to as broad databases (https://lnkd.in/eR-3PPQr). The question: why pay 250k/year for something if you can pretty much get it for free? Well, some, like Sorbonne are choosing not to (https://lnkd.in/eRXNe5pE Scite is not free but we go beyond traditional citation indices in many ways, including the citation context, the most comprehensive AI assistant and are used directly by thousands of students around the world DESPITE their university. Think about that. If you’re a leader at a University and want to learn more how we are working with other key universities, message me. Let’s shake things up, do things more efficiently and help our students and researchers.
