Twelve years ago, a mutual friend introduced me to two ambitious women who wanted to "pick my brain about PR" at a café. A well-known celebrity was nearby, and one of these young women boldly approached him, asking him to sign up for her small newsletter. He looked slightly uncomfortable but smiled and recognized it. "theSkimm?" he said, and complimented the name. Since then, I’ve been on this journey with Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg — as an advisor, “big sister,” and publicist. When we launched our businesses, we ended up in the same building, sharing tiny offices and an even tinier bathroom. We borrowed their microwave, they stole our snacks. And it was there that they grew theSkimm from a small newsletter into a media phenomenon. During this time, a prestigious publication wanted to feature theSkimm on their cover, but only had room for one co-founder. I emphasized how important this would be for their brand, yet Carly and Danielle firmly believed the brand required both of them, so they declined. As their publicist, I was annoyed. As their friend, I was inspired. Years later, after I was finally convinced by Melissa Conner, Jennifer Bett Communications became theSkimm's agency of record, strengthening our partnership. Led by Emily Tschirhart and Daria M, the collaboration has resulted in significant press moments showcasing powerful campaigns like #ShowUsYourLeave and their free #Don’tWait tool for medical appointments. All of us at JBC are incredibly proud of Carly, Danielle, and the entire theSkimm team.
