On October 30, the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned 19 Indian private sector entities and two Indian nationals for facilitating the circumvention and evasion of US sanctions against Russia. The action highlights the expansive nature of the US sanctions regime, which has shifted focus from announcing new types of sanctions against Russia to tackling circumvention and pursuing enforcement, especially in third countries. In this client alert, we outline the legal and practical implications of this action as well as the scrutiny Indian firms should anticipate moving forward. Jenner & Block is representing Team Roc – Roc Nation’s social justice division – and the Midwest Innocence Project in a new lawsuit, filed today, against the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department (KCKPD) and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas for failure to comply with the Kansas Open Records Act (KORA) and disclose records relating to police misconduct. In November 2023, the group submitted a public records request to the KCKPD and the Unified Government, seeking documents that would shed light on widespread corruption and misconduct by the KCKPD, aid efforts to hold perpetrators accountable, and facilitate the necessary reforms to rebuild the public’s trust in law enforcement and the local criminal justice system. Over the past year, the Unified Government and KCKPD have failed to comply. The Jenner team representing Team ROC and MIP includes Partner Rachael Trummel and Associates Kristen Dupard, Esq. and Loreal Rock. In September, amid the divisive runup to the election, Senate Democrats and Republicans found rare common ground: they both agreed that the CEO of Steward Health Care should face criminal prosecution for refusing to appear at a hearing. The Senate’s unanimous vote marked the latest escalation in the legislative branch’s use of its coercive powers against private individuals. As the 119th Congress assembles next year, this vote may be a harbinger of even more aggressive private sector oversight to come. In a?Law.com?article,?Partner?Emily Loeb, and Associates?Sam Ungar?and?Michael Brady?delve into the implications and what businesses should prepare for in 2025.
